Hamburg - USA
With annual sales of more than 2 trillion Euro in goods and services, Germany is one of the world's largest economies and the »engine« of the European Union. The United States is Germany's second-largest trading partner with two-way trade totalling 88 billion USD in 2000. 2,000 US companies are located in Germany. With 1 million employees this makes Germany the largest investment outside of the United States.
In Hamburg there are over 100 US companies, many of them global corporations. Hamburg is one of Europe's most dynamic business centres with an international port, a large media centre and a growing competence in the field of life sciences (biomedical engineering, renewable energies). Hamburg is also the third largest centre for aviation in the world after Seattle and Toulouse and is home to AIRBUS and the A380.
So, it's not just the beautiful city and the great nightlife that make studying abroad in Hamburg an interesting option for US students.
Some of our US guest students have written about their experiences in Hamburg and at our university:
"...The entire experience of the school, the people and the city combined to be the best experience in my life and has definitely helped me to strengthen my application for jobs..." more - Brian Stachurski, University of Rhode Island [Business]
»...it completely challenged my assumptions of anything resembling a typical classroom in America. I would soon realize this applied to nearly every class in my curriculum, but specific to this class, I enjoyed the prospect of focusing all of my energy, research, and work to a single, cohesive goal...« more - Andromeda Winters, USA [Film]
"Germany has been and continues to be an absolutely incredible place to meet new people and absorb the culture and history within Europe..." more - Clemens Wan, Cooper Union, New York [Engineering]
" The skills I learned from these hands-on group experiences are both critical, as well as something that I simply could not have learned by sitting in lectures at my home university." more - Lyric Kesteloot, Cal State, Long Beach [International Studies]
»I have been having a great time being out in the world and creating what I want to create and being pushed in the directions that actually make me a stronger artist« more - Ryan Castillo, USA
" I learned a lot about...how to slow down, to think about what I am going to be making instead of just jumping in and making it." more - Alex Gracey, MICA Baltimore [Design]
"One of the projects...was to create a fictitious company. This project really helped me tie the course material into the real world." more - Scott Myers, San Diego State University [Finance]
"In my time in Germany I had the opportunity to visit Berlin, Munich, and Frankfurt, and Hamburg seemed to have the most to offer as far as diversity and a mix of culture." more - Matthew Hamilton, Virginia Tech [Engineering]
"This program doesn’t just give you an idea how the locals live, it allows you to actually live like one..." more - Bard King, University of Rhode Island [Finance]
"It was hard on me having to hear so much of a foreign language every day...but by the end of the semester my German was so good I didn't have this problem anymore. Now German barely feels like a foreign language to me..." more - Shell Holland, Ruttgers University [Engineering & Computer Science]
"For a student coming from the US, the German university system is something completely different in every sense of the word..." more - Kristopher Ouellette, University of Rhode Island [Business & German]
