Art and Design - International Guest Students
The foundation studies in the Department of Design are characterised by an intensive groundwork in artistic and design techniques, in which creativity and innovation have a solid framework and are at the same time opened up to experiment. In the main studies design concepts are developed and realised in a wide spectrum of applications in all media from book, web design to a fashion collection. International art and design students interested in completing a semester abroad have the opportunity to get study credit for courses in the following areas:
- Illustration / Communication Design
Hamburg is Germany's second largest city after Berlin and home to fifty museums and galleries and with its creative scene and large publishing houses it has important location advantages for art and design programmes. The Department of Design is particularly strong in the areas of typography as well as photography and book illustration, where students have won many awards. A new area of development is »comic« where the department has professors of international reputation.
Courses in Hamburg: Painting, Drawing, Typography, Webdesign, Photography, Advertising Design, Book Illustration, Media Illustration, Comic, Printing and more...
- Fashion, Costume and Textile Product Design

Hamburg is home to awarding-winning theatres, offering everything from big, classical productions to fringe theatre. The State Opera House offers a wide programme of opera and its state of the art staging and scenery technology provides the framework for spectacular productions. The Department of Design's »Costume Design« programme was developed by the internationally renowned Dirk von Bodisco and is one of only seven programmes in the whole of Germany. Its students and graduates work closely with Hamburg's theatres and opera house.

International guest students do not need German to participate in the classes, as they will be completing projects and the professors and lecturers can provide instructional support in English. Download the Design brochure for descriptions of classes.
International guest students also participate in the International Workshop during the semester. This is a group of students and a lecturer, who meet once a week to discuss work and ideas. The workshop language is English.
