Study Abroad - Guest Student Programme

If you are an international student and would like to get some study experience at a German university why not take a semester or year out and study at Hamburg University of Applied Sciences. Each semester we have places available for international guest students.

The academic year is split into two semesters. You can apply to come for one, a maximum of two semesters:

Winter semester: Sept. - Feb.   Application deadline: 30. April

Summer semester: March - July   Application deadline: 30. October

  • What programmes do we offer?

Hamburg University of Applied Sciences offers a wide range of programmes in engineering, life sciences, business, computer science, design, media and social sciences. A small number of these programmes have modules in English or can be completed without knowledge of German [see Programmes].

  • What qualifications must I have?

You must be enrolled in a Bachelor's programme at a university in your home country and have successfully completed two academic years.

  • Do I need to be able to speak German?

If you are taking classes in German, then you must have good knowledge of the German language (B2). If you are taking courses in English, knowledge of German is not a prerequisite. You can live very well in Hamburg without German, as it is an international city and most people speak English. If however, you have the time, we would recommend that you learn some basics in German before you come, to improve the cultural experience.

  • Do I have to pay tuition?

Guest students from our partner universities do not have to pay tuition fees at Hamburg University of Applied Sciences but you do have to pay a semester contribution [222 EUR]. For this money you will get a semester ticket which allows you unlimited travel on Hamburg's public transport system.

Freemovers (students from universities with whom we do not have an agreement) also have to pay tuition fees of 375 EUR per semester in addition to the semester contribution.

Information about other costs - see »Study Abroad/Exchange« menu to the left.

  • What status do I have as a guest student?

You are a non-degree seeking student. You can pick and choose from different semesters within your chosen degree programme, with the exception of the final examinations.

  • Do you provide housing/services?

Information about accommodation and other services can be found in the »Study Abroad/Exchange« menu to the left.
