Where can I live in Hamburg?

Finding accommodation in Hamburg is not always easy. We therefore recommend that you start looking for a place to live in good time. If you have friends or relatives in Hamburg ask them to help.

  • Halls of Residence

The halls of residence in Hamburg are run by the Studierendenwerk Hamburg and offer affordable accommodation for students. Generally, students have their own room in an apartment which they share with other students - bathroom and kitchen are shared. The monthly rent for a room in hall starts at roughly EUR 200 [including heating, water and electricity]. New students can apply at the earliest three months before the start of their degree programme. Further information about the halls of residence as well as the application form can be found on the Studierendenwerk Hamburg website.

Service Package

Students can apply for the Service Package, which guarantees a place in a hall of residence and support from student tutors in the halls of residences. Applications can be made online on the Studierendenwerk Hamburg website.

TIP: At the beginning of each semester new students can participate in a draw for 50% of the free rooms in the halls of residence. Find out more on the Studierendenwerk website.

  • Private rooms

Students looking for people to share a flat with or take over their room, use the university information boards [»Schwarzes Brett«] or the internet, for example, the websites:

Wohnbörse Studierendenwerk Hamburg

www.studenten-wg.de

www.wg-gesucht.de.

They have databases where you can search for rooms or flat-sharing. The rent for private rooms can lie between EUR 250 and 350 per month; often more.

At the Accommodation Infocentre [Info Zentrum Wohnen of the Studierendenwerk] you can find offers of rooms and flats from private landlords.

Landlords also advertise in the Wednesday and Saturday editions of the local Hamburg newspaper (Hamburger Abendblatt).
