Pre-study work experience [Vorpraxis]

The applied sciences university system in Germany places great emphasis on a practical orientation during the degree programmes. Part of this concept at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences is a pre-study work experience [Vorpraxis] of 13 weeks which applies to some Bachelor degree programmes. The degree programme information in thedegree programme database will tell you if your chosen programme requires a pre-study work experience.

What is pre-study work experience?

The pre-study work experience should give an insight into the fields of work of the intended qualification and ensure initial practical experiences which can be developed during the degree programme. Each department has regulations for the pre-study work experience in which the requirements for the pre-study placement are described. You can find them on the department websites or request them in writing from the department directly.

Can I complete the pre-study work experience in my home country?

In general it is possible to complete the pre-study work experience before coming to Germany; however, it can lead to problems of recognition by the department. It is recommended that the pre-study work experience be completed in a German company. You should - if possible - contact the placement advisor in your intended department for advice.

Does the pre-study work experience have to be completed before starting the degree programme?

No, it can be completed at any time during the foundation course. It may be a prerequisite for the successful completion of the foundation course. We recommend however, that the pre-study work experience be completed before starting the degree programme, as lectures and coursework take up a lot of time during the semester.
