What qualifications do I need to study in Germany?

Bachelor programmes: You need a secondary school certificate equivalent to the German Abitur or Fachhochschulreife. Check www.anabin.de if you are not sure whether your qualifications are sufficient.

If your qualifications are not sufficient to allow you to begin studying directly, you can study for a year at a Studienkolleg, at the end of which you will take an aptitude test [Feststellungsprüfung].

Master Programmes: In addition to your secondary school certificate (see above) you must also send an authenticated copy of your university degree (e.g. Bachelor) with an authenticated translation where relevant. For some programmes you will also be asked to provide proof of your GRE score. Other prerequisites may apply; they will be listed in the application forms.

Language: You must also have a good working knowledge of German and/or English, depending on your chosen degree programme.

- Information about the German language requirements for applicants whose first language is not German.

- Information about the English language requirements for applicants whose first language is not English.

Applicants for Design programmes

Applicants for the design degree courses must also take a Test of Artistic Ability [künstlerische Eignungsprüfung]. Please apply directly to the Design department of the HAW Hamburg, Armgartstraße 24, 22087 Hamburg with your portfolio between 1. and 15. October to take this test.

Self-tests

For some of our degree programmes there are online self-tests, which give you an idea of the content of the course and allow you to test your abilities. This will hopefully give you a better idea about whether the degree programme matches your skills and interests. Click here: www.haw-navigator.de
