How do I enrol on a degree programme?
Once your application has been processed and you have (were necessary) passed the entry examinations, the university commission will decide whom they would like to offer a place.
If you are chosen, you will receive a letter from the Admissions Office offering you a place on a degree programme. In general, you have ten days in which to accept this offer in writing. If you do not answer within the ten day period, your place will be offered to someone else. The deadline cannot be extended. If you cannot personally accept the offer letter, then please ensure that a relative or friend has a letter of authorisation [Vollmacht] which allows them to accept the place on your behalf. Please note: There may be an exception to this rule for some programmes, e.g. Information Engineering (BEng). Your offer letter will tell you what to do.
- How do I accept the offer?
With the offer letter you will receive an enrolment form as well as a payment slip for the semester contribution [EUR 259,70]. You must return the enrolment form with proof of payment of the semester contribution and administration fee within the ten days, unless stated otherwise in the offer letter.
- Health Insurance
It is only possible to be enrolled at a Hamburg university if you have health insurance. With the exception of students from EU countries [they can remain in their home system] you must be insured with a German health insurance company. Health insurance at present costs approximately EUR 47 per month plus EUR 8 for the national nursing insurance scheme. For more information about how to get insurance, click on the addresses to the right. Proof of insurance must be sent to the Admissions Office before your enrolment is completed. This does not have to be done within the ten day period.
- When do I get my student ID?
Once your enrolment is completed you will receive your student ID and a semster ticket which allows you free travel on Hamburg's public transport system. You will also receive information about yourregistration for our student system HELIOS. The paper proving you are enroled [Immatrikulationsbescheinigung] can be printed out from HELIOS. You will need this when you go to the local authorities to get your residency permit. You should register within 7 days of arriving in Hamburg [see information here].
- How do I enrol for classes?
You enrol for classes in the first week of the semester, during the orientation week. This is organised by students to help you with the most important questions about studying at the HAW Hamburg. Any further questions you have can be dealt with then.
