Study abroad costs and funding
- Costs
When planning a study abroad semester in Hamburg you should plan for the following costs:
- accommodation (in hall of residence) 250 - 350 Euro/month; private housing 300 - 400 Euro/month
- semester contribution (222 Euro) - see below
- health insurance (58 Euro/month) - see below
- living costs of 350 - 500 Euro/month; depending on your lifestyle
- tuition fees (for »freemovers«) 375 Euro per semester - see below
Total costs for a semester: ca. 3.500 - 5.000 Euro
- Health insurance
International guest students from EU countries are covered by their home health insurance. All you need to bring with you is the European Union Health Insurance Card or an E128. You can get these directly from your health insurance company.
Students from Turkey can get a TA11 from their home health insurance company, which they must show to the AOK to get a health insurance waiver.
Students from outside the EU will be required to acquire German health insurance. This costs ca. 58 Euros per month and is mandatory for enrolment at a German university. Students can apply before they get to Hamburg. Application forms will be sent with the enrolment forms for Hamburg University of Applied Sciences.
- Tuition fees / Semester contribution
Students from partner universities will have their tuition fees waived. You will however, have to pay a semester contribution of 220 Euros. For this money you get a semester ticket which allows you unlimited travel on Hamburg's public transport system.
Students who do not come from partner universities (freemovers) will also have to pay tuition fees of 375 Euros per semester in addition to the semester contribution.
- Funding/Scholarships
With the exception of some US partner university semester scholarships, Hamburg University of Applied Sciences unfortunately cannot offer scholarships or funding to international guest students.
EU students from partner universities can get funding through the Erasmus LLL programme. Overseas students should check whether they are eligible for scholarships, for example with the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service).
American students can apply for a deferment of their loan payments in the States when studying abroad. Hamburg University of Applied Sciences is recognised by the US Department of Education. Our institution code is 02303000.
Hamburg University of Applied Sciences participates in the British Columbia Student Assistance Program (BCSAP). Our institution code is QUXP. More information here: www.bcsap.bc.ca
Working part-time
EU guest students can work a maximum of 20 hours a week. All other guest students are allowed to work a maximum of 90 days in one calendar year. You must however, be able to fund your study abroad stay without working; i.e. students from non EU-countries must be able to show funding of 638 Euro/month, when they apply for their residence permit.
Jobs on campus are very rare and generally go to German or degree-seeking students. Finding a part-time job is not easy, if you do not speak German.
