RESEARCH AND TRANSFER CENTRE „APPLICATIONS OF LIFE SCIENCES“


The Research and Transfer Centre Applications of Life Sciences (abbreviation: FTZ-ALS) of the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW Hamburg) was established in August 2007. The FTZ-ALS is an institution of the Faculty of Life Sciences of the HAW Hamburg.

 

As a research and development institute, the centre offers local, national and international project-related approaches to solving problems primarily in the field of Life Sciences (incl. biotechnology, medical engineering, pharmacology and environmental protection technology) as well as superordinate topics such as energy, climate protection and sustainability.

 

With the foundation of the Research and Transfer Centre "Applications of Life Sciences", HAW Hamburg acknowledges and backs the keen interest in technological innovations in the domain of Life Sciences by establishing a new, technology-oriented research institution. The field of Life Sciences is one of the most important clusters of the future of the Hanseatic City of Hamburg as defined by Hamburg’s Senate. Biotechnology, medical engineering, environmental protection and topics such as healthy nutrition are of immediate relevance to many people and significantly contribute to the development of our society.

 

 

The main objective of the FTZ-ALS is to support fundamental and development research – especially by conducting practice-oriented research projects. Furthermore, the centre will promote the contribution of the HAW Hamburg to the knowledge and technology transfer on a national and international level.

Its central tasks are as follows:

  • Implementation of interdisciplinary research projects in the field of Life Sciences and other subject areas;
  • Strengthening international cooperations and supporting the establishment of networks;
  • Organization of conferences, symposia and further training programmes in the field of Life Sciences as well as associated disciplines and superordinate subject areas;
  • Advice to HAW professors and professors working at other universities with regards to the raising of external funding in the Life Sciences domain;
  • Application and adaptation of Hamburg’s research & development results to other regions and countries
  • Promotion of the young generation by supervising Master’s and PhD theses on Life Sciences topics.
