Services for our guest students
Housing
We have a limited number of rooms in halls of residences that we can make available to guest students from partner universities. You have your own room and share kitchen and bathroom with a small number of students.
The monthly rent costs between 265 and 315 Euro and includes bedding, bed clothes, kitchen utensils and internet connection. Housing does not include a meal plan, but cheap meals are available in the cafeterias on campus (1.85 - 4.95 Euro/meal). Most students learn to cook during their semester abroad and share meals with other students in their apartment. It is a great way to get to know people.
Priority is given to students from overseas and the rooms are awarded on a first come, first serve basis, so it is important to apply early. The housing application form is part of the general application forms for guest students.
Due to a very high demand for rooms, it is only possible to get a room for one semester, even if you are planning to come to Hamburg for two semesters.
If you want to live privately or we aren't able to offer you a room in hall, you can look for rooms on the following websites:
Accommodation Finder Campus Hamburg
Accommodation Finder Studierendenwerk Hamburg

And if you need a place to stay for a day or two because you are arriving early, Hamburg has two youth hostels:

International Buddy Programme
German students at Hamburg University of Applied Sciences act as »buddies« for our guest students. They will collect you from the airport or train station and bring you to your hall of residence. They will help you with registration, opening a bank account and sorting out any paperwork; everything that is difficult in a (still) foreign language and city. They will introduce you to your department and help with questions during the semester.
The International Buddy Programme organises the Hamburg Programme, an orientation programme before the semester starts. In four afternoons you will get to know the city and the other international guest students in your semester. The programme is rounded off with a Potluck Welcome Dinner for all the international guest students and their German buddies.
During the semester the International Buddy Programme organises events, parties and excursions in Hamburg and beyond. A great way to get to know country and people.
Semester ticket
When you study in Hamburg you don't need a car to get around. Hamburg has an excellent network of underground trains (U- and S-Bahn) and buses that will get you round the city at all times of day or night. www.hvv.de
As part of the semester contribution you pay to be a guest student in Hamburg, you get a semester ticket which allows you unlimited travel on Hamburg's public transport system.
Hamburg also has a great network of cycle paths, so you might want to consider getting a bicycle when you are here.
German classes
Hamburg University of Applied Sciences does not have a language faculty, so we are unfortunately not able to offer German classes as part of the curriculum. We have a cooperation with Colon Language Center, a private language school in Hamburg, which offers discounts for our international guest students.
If time allows before the semester starts, you have the opportunity to take a two-week intensive course at Colon Language Center to either brush up on your German or learn some basics. Colon Language Center also offers evening classes, so you can continue to learn German during the semester. www.colon.de
Other places where you can learn German:
Volkshochschule Hamburg
Crisol/uni-sprachkurse
DUO Deutsch-Uni Online
