In which career fields will I work?
  Well-trained health professionals are needed to meet the growing demand within the changing field of health. Graduates will work in health-related research, public administration, quality management and evaluation in the diverse institutions within the health area, e.g. health insurances, universities, hospitals, public organizations or health consulting agencies.
What is the content of the degree program?
 

This Master of Health Sciences is a two-year consecutive program (4 semesters, 120 CP total) based on a respective Bachelors degree or Diploma. It provides participants with scientific and practical skills to conduct research in the health sciences. Students gain a comprehensive understanding of research methods, their use in the field of health care, prevention and health promotion, and empirical, data-based research experiences.

The first two semesters (60 CPs) encompass modules to convey both qualitative and quantitative research methods applicable for e.g. in Health Promotion Research, Health Economics, Health Systems Research or Epidemiology; topics include Advanced Study Design and Data Analysis, Instrument Development, Advanced Biostatistics. Every semester consists of 10 Modules (30 CPs), offering a choice within the second semester in view of the following research placement. Research topics are in Epidemiology, Family and Community Health, Health Promotion, Health Systems Research and Health Behaviour. The skills acquired will be applied and practiced in the third research training-semester. Here, students will be part of a research project conducted either at the University of Applied Sciences or at another, relevant institution focusing on public health. Students will gain both practical skills, team work experiences and learn how to run a project in the field of health sciences research. The training will be supervised by a professor and accompanied by a colloquium.

The program culminates in the writing of the Master Thesis. The aim is to formulate and analyse a problem, to choose a suitable study design and to make recommendations for a practical solution. Concepts and methods learned during the program will be applied.

What skills and interests should I have?
 

Target group of this master-level program are graduates, seeking in-depth knowledge and skills of research in the complex and broad field of health sciences. Basic skills for and a strong interest in empirical research in health are important prerequisites.

What is particular to the degree program?
 

The program has a strong research orientation. To emphasize its international character, the program is held in English. Nevertheless, and particularly in view of the research training (3rd semester), advanced knowledge of German is essential (CEFR Level B2).

Are there special requirements for foreign students applicants?
  Foreign applicants should clarify admission requirements, courses of studies, and acceptance of foreign reports and certificates well in advance of coming to Germany, i.e. as early as one year before the degree program starts. How many students and professors does the department have?
  In this department 260 students (218 female and 42 male) are studying; there are 4 female and 4 male professors.
How do I apply?
 

Applications for all Master programs are made online. The online process is only activated during the application period of the respective degree programs. When can I apply?
  The degree program admits students only for the wintersemester. Application periods: 1st June - 15th July.
What are the entry requirements?
 
  • Applicants must hold at least a Bachelors degree (180 CP) either in health sciences or related disciplines with at least 2,5 (=”good”) in German equivalent marks plus Diploma Supplement/ Transcript

  • Letter of Motivation (= personal understanding of health sciences, own commitment to pursuing a career in public health; also please mention former and present experiences in the health field/ in health research; and future aspirations)

How long is the degree program?
  4 semesters; can be studied on a part-time basis.
Do I need to complete a pre-study placement?
  No, there is no requirement for a pre-study placement.
Do I have to pay fees?
 

All students have to pay a semester contribution of 298,90 €.
This includes 75,- € for the service of the Students' Organisation Hamburg (Studentenwerk Hamburg),  18,50 € for the work done by the self-governing Student Administration (AStA), 4,50 € for the Semsterticket-Härtefond and 150,90 € for the semester ticket allowing unlimited travel on Hamburg's public transport system. It also includes an administrative fee of 50,- €.


Tuition fees of 375 EUR per semester have been introduced for all undergraduate degrees and those postgraduate programs without other tuition schemes. Foreign students can apply to pay their tuition fees after they have completed their degree program. This is called »Stundung« and is only possible for the length of the degree program (e.g. Bachelor 6 or 7 semesters; Master 3 or 4 smesters) plus 2 semesters.
From winter semester 2012/13 it is planned to abolish the 375 Euro fees.
