 Renewable Energy Systems (Master)

 Fakultät Life Sciences

In which career fields will I work?

An increasing global demand for energy and the effect of global warming require new concepts for a sustainable energy supply. Renewable energy technologies will play a key role in meeting these challenges. The engineering of and dealing with renewable energy systems have already generated a booming branch and a hundred billion Euro market worldwide.
As more and more countries are going to enforce the use of renewable energy there is an increasing demand for experts and engineers worldwide. In 2010 in Germany there already about 370,000 employees in the renewable energy business with an annual employment growth rate of 10%.

The new postgraduate degree programme “Renewable Energy Systems –Environmental and Process Engineering” provides indepth training for engineers working in industry, planning offices, organizations and research.

The typical scope of work for graduates is:

  • Engineering (development, planning, design, execution) of solar
thermal systems, photovoltaic systems, biogas, biomass to liquid and
wind energy systems as well as downstream systems for energy
    transformation and distribution
  • Research and development of certain components and systems for
    renewable energy plants
  • Engineering of hybrid systems for autonomous energy supply
  • Integration of renewable energy systems into utility grids
  • Operation and service of renewable energy plants
  • Assessment and management of renewable energy projects
What is the content of the degree program?

The Master’s programme comprises of advanced courses in technology and engineering of:

  • Bio energy systems
  • Solar energy systems
  • Wind energy systems
  • Downstream systems for energy transformation and distribution.

The focus is on systems engineering. In addition, mathematical and IT skills are deepened and techniques for
process simulation are implemented. Business and management skills are also trained.
All course contents have an applied approach. In addition to lectures, working in projects and in labs is an essential aspect of the programme. Students can involve themselves in local and international cooperations the Faculty of Life Sciences maintains in various ways.

Programme organization:
The first two semesters are made up of lectures in small groups, seminars and lab work. Students will complete individual projects on different topics. Set research topics will be completed in the labs.
The Master\'s thesis is written in the third semester; in most cases in industry, with renewable energy related companies. Each semester is awarded a total of 30 credit points.
For details see course programme.

What is particular to the degree program?
The programme and exams are in English; the Master's thesis can be written in English or German.
A good command of English and some knowledge of German have to be proven by international acknowledged tests (see requirements).
The degree qualification “Master of Engineering” is approved internationally and qualifies to enter PhD programmes.
The master programme was certified by ASIIN.
Are there special requirements for foreign students applicants?
Foreign applicants should clarify admission requirements, courses of studies, and acceptance of foreign reports and certificates well in advance of coming to Germany, i.e. as early as one year before the degree program starts. Further information can be found online under www.haw-hamburg.de/international and Further information can be found online under www.haw-hamburg.de/english
How many students and professors does the department have?

With 12000 students Hamburg University of Applied Sciences is the second largest institution of higher education in the Hamburg region and one of the largest of its kind (University of Applied Sciences) in Germany.

About 2350 students are enrolled in the Faculty Life Sciences, whereof 730 (186 female, 564 male) study within the Departments Environmental Engineering and Process Engineering. Teaching at the faculty is carried through 65 (15 female, 50 male) professors and a range of assistant lecturers.

How do I apply?

Applications for all Master programs are made online. The online process is only activated during the application period of the respective degree programs. It is not possible to apply outside of the application periods. More information you find under www.haw-hamburg.de/masterstudium or send an email to master-application@hv.haw-hamburg.de
