Zusammenfassung: Almost all passenger jet aircraft today use potentially contaminated bleed air for cabin ventilation. A detailed look at the design of engine bearings, their lubrication and sealing reveals that jet engines leak small amounts of oil by design and not only in failure cases. An equation is derived to calculate the concentration of a possible cabin air contamination. Results show good agreement with measured concentrations of hydrocarbons in aircraft cabins under normal conditions. The solution to the problem of cabin air contamination is a bleed free design. Other partial remedies are briefly discussed.

Definition and Discussion of the Intrinsic Efficiency of Winglets

Zusammenfassung: Three simple equations are derived to define the "Intrinsic Aerodynamic Efficiency of Winglets" independent of the horizontal extension of the winglet and independent of the winglet’s (relative) height. This Intrinsic Aerodynamic Efficiency allows a quick comparison of purely the aerodynamic shape of winglets independent of the selected size chosen for a certain aircraft installation. The Intrinsic Aerodynamic Efficiency is calculated in 3 steps: STEP 1: The relative total drag reduction due to the winglet is converted into an assumed contribution of the winglet only on the span efficiency factor. STEP 2: If the winglet also increases span, its performance is converted into one without the effect of span increase. STEP 3: The winglet’s reduction in induced drag is compared to a horizontal wing extension. If the winglet needs e.g. to be three times longer than the horizontal extension to achieve the same induced drag reduction, its Intrinsic Aerodynamic Efficiency is the inverse or 1/3. Winglet metrics as defined are calculated from literature inputs. In order to evaluate winglets further, the mass increase due to winglets is estimated in addition to the reduction of drag on aircraft level and fuel burn.

With a clear focus on requirements and first principles applied to the technologies in question, it tries to bring inflated expectations down to earth. Economic, ecologic and social (noise) based well accepted evaluation principles are set against wishful thinking. >>> Design/methodology/approach – Aeronautical teaching basics are complemented with own thoughts and explanations. In addition, the results of past research projects are applied to the topic. >>> Findings – Electric air mobility may become useful in some areas of aviation. Small short-range general aviation aircraft may benefit from battery-electric or hybrid-electric propulsion. Urban air mobility in large cities will give time advantages to super-rich people, but mass transportation in cities will require a public urban transport system. Battery-electric passenger aircraft are neither economic nor ecologic. How overall advantages can be obtained from turboelectric distributed propulsion (without batteries) is not clear. Maybe turbo-hydraulic propulsion has some weight advantages over the electric approach. >>> Research limitations/implications – Research findings are from basic considerations only. A detailed evaluation of system principles on a certain aircraft platform may lead to somewhat different results. >>> Practical implications – The discussion about electric air mobility concepts may get more factual. Investors may find some of the information provided easy to understand and helpful for their decision making. >>> Social implications – How to tackle challenges of resource depletion and environment pollution is a social question. Better knowledge of the problem enables the public to take a firm position in the discussion. >>> Originality/value – Holistic evaluation of electric air mobility has not much been applied yet. This presentation shows how to proceed.

Zusammenfassung: In this paper, the aeroelastic modeling and conceptual flutter analysis of a simple 2-D box wing is investigated. For each wing the torsion and bending elasticity is simulated by two torsional and longitudinal springs at its elastic axis. Furthermore, the connection winglet is simulated by a longitudinal spring. The aeroelastic governing equations are derived using Lagrange’s equations. Also, for aeroelastic loads simulation on the box wing, the Theodorsen aerodynamic model is used. The effects of various design parameters such as front and rear wing physical and geometrical properties, the connection winglet angle and stiffness, and aircraft altitude on the flutter of the system are investigated. Results show that the connection winglet stiffness and angle have significant influence on the box wing flutter boundary.

Zusammenfassung: >>> Purpose – This presentation gives an introduction to the problem of contaminated cabin air and points out possible solutions especially by looking at carbon filters placed in the main path of the bleed air from the engine to the cabin ("total cabin air filtration") in additon to filters in the cabin air recirculation path. Maintenance issures related to the topic are also considered. >>> Design/methodology/approach – The literature review is complemented with own explanations, thoughts and derivations. >>> Findings – There is a real health and flight safety risk due to contaminated cabin air. For the infrequent flyer the risk is very low. Also aviation statistics are not dominated by cabin air related accidents. Nevertheless, a bleed air based air conditioning system can be regarded as applying a fundamentally wrong systems engineering approach. A substantial improvement of the situation can only be reached with filters added to the large fleet of existing airplanes. A full solution, however, requires airconditioning with outside air and dedicated compressors. >>> Research limitations/implications – The study is based primarily on references. >>> Practical implications – Passengers and crew are made aware of the risk of cabin air contamination based on technical facts. Given detailes of technical solutions contribute to the scientific discussion. >>> Social implications – Better knowledge of the problem should enable passengers and crew to maintain a firm position in the sometimes heated discussion. >>> Originality/value – Engineering based information with a critical view on the topic seems to be missing in public. This presentation contributes filling this gap.
