Your HAW account

On enrolment to the HAW Hamburg you are given a user name (e.g. aba123) and password for your HAW Hamburg account for our campus online systems. This account includes your HAW Hamburg eMail address, a student profile in HELIOS or StISys and access to EMIL, our E-Learning platform.

IMPORTANT: You must change the initial password you were sent with your enrolment papers BEFORE you log in for the first time.

Questions concerning HAW account / password

fold faq How can I change my password?

You can change your password of the HAW account by using Selfservice.

Password rules:

  • Your password must contain at least 8 and a maximum of 20 characters.
  • Your password must contain at least one lower case, one capital letter and one numeral
    (no special characters or umlauts, because these can generate problems in several systems).
  • Please do NOT use any three characters in a row of your first or last name, username or mail address.

If you have added your current mobile number to your personal data in HELIOS, you can independently reset your password with a mobile TAN at any time.

fold faq I have forgotten my password. What can I do?

If you have saved your mobile phone number to your student profile in HELIOS you can reset your password using mobile TAN numbers:

(Note: Adding your mobile phone number in HELIOS under "change my data" > "telephone numbers". You have to wait 24 hours before you can use your mobile phone number mTAN.)

Alternatively you can go to the Chip Card Service Office for personal authentification to reset your password instantly:

fold faq I have forgotten my username. What can I do?

Due to data security policies you can only be told your username after personal authentification. You can do this by showing your HAW student chip card and a valid identity card or passport.

    Monday - Wednesday 1 - 4 p.m.
    Thursday 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 and 1 - 2 p.m.
    Friday 11 a.m. - 1 p.m.

    closed on wednesday!

fold faq How long can I use my HAW account and/or my HAW-Mailer inbox?
  • students:
    Your HAW-Mailer inbox will stay active and be accessable for you for one year after deregistering (Exmatrikulation) before being deactivated. Please use this time period to save your inbox data.
    Access to other applications, e.g. HELIOS, VPN und WLAN will remain for 70 days after receiving your deregistration form.

  • professors/employees:
    Your HAW-account and HAW-Mailer inbox will be accessable as long as you are an active member of the HAW Hamburg. Lecturers can apply for 'Emeritierung' at the Personalservice in order to keep access after retirement.

  • assistant lecturer:
    Your HAW-account and HAW-Mailer inbox will be accessable during your contract period plus an additional amount of 70 days and will be deactivated afterwards.
