All-India Symposium on Sustainability in Higher Education

Do., 29.04.2027 – Fr., 30.04.2027
Goa, India

Part of the Goa Global Sustainability Summit, to be held in Goa, India, on 29th-30th April 2027

Background Information

Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in India, comprising over 1,000 universities and more than 45,000 colleges, represent a critical yet underutilized avenue for advancing the nation's sustainability goals . Globally, universities are increasingly recognized not merely as centers of learning but as living labs for sustainability—testbeds for innovative solutions in energy management, waste reduction, sustainable procurement, and curriculum transformation.

In India, however, the integration of sustainability remains uneven. While environmental consciousness has shifted from a peripheral concern to a central question confronting universities, many institutions still treat sustainability as an additional subject rather than a foundational way of thinking . Courses may introduce environmental concerns without fundamentally reorienting how students analyze problems, evaluate trade-offs, or consider long-term consequences. The deeper challenge lies in embedding systems thinking, interdisciplinarity, and ethical reflection across curricula—an ambition still far from being uniformly realized .

Financial limitations remain the most immediate obstacle, with public universities operating under tight budgetary conditions that prioritize access and enrolment expansion over infrastructure renewal. Governance arrangements pose another challenge, with responsibility for sustainability frequently dispersed across multiple administrative units, resulting in fragmented decision-making and weak accountability .

Yet there is also a profound opportunity. Indian scholarship brings to the fore questions of scale, affordability, inclusion, and governance—ensuring that sustainability is not reduced to imported templates but grounded in local realities. The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 provides a policy framework that encourages holistic, multidisciplinary education with sustainability at its core. The Government of India's emphasis on global rankings (such as QS Rankings 2027) further incentivizes institutions to demonstrate commitment to sustainability indicators, which are increasingly weighted in international assessments .

Goa itself has demonstrated leadership in this domain. The state government has received multiple National Skoch Awards for initiatives in higher education, literacy, and skill development under the National Education Policy framework . The "Converge – Shiksha Udyojak Sangam" initiative, which strengthens industry-education collaboration, exemplifies the kind of partnership the All-India Symposium seeks to foster.
