The Blue Economy refers to the sustainable use of ocean and coastal resources for economic growth, improved livelihoods, and jobs while preserving the health of marine ecosystems. With over 70% of Earth’s surface covered by oceans, the blue economy encompasses fisheries, aquaculture, maritime transport, renewable energy (offshore wind, tidal), biotechnology, coastal tourism, and carbon sequestration. 

Brazil, with its 7,400 km of coastline and rich marine biodiversity, holds a strategic position in the Atlantic Ocean. However, rapid urbanisation, pollution, overfishing, and climate change threaten these assets, demanding urgent, science-based governance and cross-sectoral collaboration.

It is based on the need to discuss current and future trends related to the world´s blue economy, that the “World Symposium on Blue Economy:  From Local to Global Commitments to Innovation, Conservation and Climate Resilience to Harness the Potentials of the World´s Oceans”.
