Project: "Climate Change Communication Across Audiences" (2018-2023)

Communication, information and training on matters related to climate change are perceived as important in order to mobilise people and to catalyse action. Over the years, the International Climate Change Information and Research Programme  has been organising a range of events across all continents, reachinga wide range of stakeholders. It has also been spearheading the world´s leading peer reviewed book series on climate change: as part of a large outreach exercise. Since 2008,  over 50.000 climate scientists, members of NGOs, government officials and and practitioners from over 100 countries have taken part on, or benefitted from ICCIRP´s activities.

ICCIRP is presently running a major, long-term study, which analyses how climate change communication takes place across various audiences. The focus of the research is on the developing countries which are part of the DAC list: The study is being performed over a 5 years period (from 1st June 2018 to 30th May 2023), and will involve a wide range of stakeholders across the developing world, where there is a chronic paucity of research and data on aspects of climate change information and communication.

The study is structured around various stages, and will entail the organisation of specialist events and collection of data acrossa variety of audiences. These include:

  • media professionals
  • policy and decision-makers
  • scientists
  • members of NGOs
  • farmers
  • workers at international aid agencies
  • industry representatives

In order to systematise the data collection, simple and straightforward instruments will be deployed, containing a set of very specificquestions which were developed by a panel of experts. These will be sent to each group, on a step-by-step approach, for completion. The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)  2016/679,   approved by the European Union (EU), applies. This means that ICCIRP treat all data under very strict data protection procedures, so as to ensure they are onlyused for the purposes of each survey. ICCIRP will also seek the explicity consent from respondents to take part in each survey, and to process the data provided in anonymised form.  The results of each study will be published in peer-reviewed journals via open access,so that they are readily available for a wide audience.Further details on how to take part on the study will be released by means of spefic calls for contributions.
