EARTHS – Education and research oriented training on Health Sciences

The ‘Hamburg University of Applied Sciences’ (HAW) Research and Transfer Center – Sustainability and Climate change management (FTZ-NK) is organising the ‘EARTHS’ (Education And Research oriented Training in Health Sciences) Summer School in cooperation with the Health Sciences Department of the HAW and the ‘Bernhard-Nocht Institute of Tropicial Medicine’.

THE ‘EARTHS’ summer school is a 4 week training program co-funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) through financial support from the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development  (BMZ). The first summer school round with 25 participants from 12 countries all around Africa and Yemen was conducted in 2017, with great success. The summer school is addressed towards Master and PhD students from developing countries (Africa, Asia and Latin America) who have been awarded a DAAD scholarship and hold a primary qualification in a life science or health science related field.

It aims to prepare university students and junior researchers for the tasks of teaching and research in their respective institutions. Strengthening qualitative and quantitative research skills specifically research statistics and epidemiology, developing research projects and using interactive teaching skills are areas on which the summer school will focus. Introducing the participants to current and historic aspects of the German culture as well as facilitating the building of bridges between German researchers and the participants and amongst the participants are additional aims of the training program.
