Shanghai and Hamburg

The Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg and the port and business metropolis Shanghai, each of which is the second-largest city in its respective country, have been partner cities since 1986. Every two years Hamburg and Shanghai sign a memorandum which defines the key areas of cooperation. Particularly important issues in this partnership are urban planning, urban development, and academic exchange. More than 24 million people live in Shanghai, which is located at the mouth of the Yangtze River, and its port is the largest in the world.
