Queer Families: mental Health in Hamburg

Mental health is a key factor in the well-being of families. It significantly contributes to stability, resilience and family cohesion while also playing a crucial role in children’s development. According to an 2022 AOK Family Study (available in German only), there is a direct link between parents’ mental health and their children’s well-being. Impaired mental health among parents can negatively affect the overall health of the entire family. Queer families face unique challenges: discrimination and societal prejudice impose additional stress, which can severely impact their mental health.

The QueerFam study aims to assess the mental health of queer families in Hamburg and its metropolitan area. It seeks to understand which support services are utilized, identify barriers to access and determine whether crucial resources are lacking. The goal is to highlight needs and provide recommendations for addressing gaps in support services.
