The global textile industry heavily impacts the environment, relying on fossil-based chemicals that produce persistent pollutants and endanger human and ecological health. Transitioning to sustainable bio-based alternatives remains a challenge, however, as these options face hurdles in performance, cost-effectiveness, and industrial stability, alongside a lack of supportive recycling systems and regulations. To address these challenges, the TEX4GREEN project covers the entire textile value chain with the aim of eliminating hazardous fossil-based chemicals from feedstock and textile production. TEX4GREEN will develop, scale up and demonstrate SSbD bio-based solutions across three critical value chains: optimise and scale lignin-based coatings, develop bio-based surfactants, and develop bio-based dyes & fixing agents. These innovations will target textile applications in both technical and consumer sectors, such as sports, interior textiles and fashion, while ensuring performance, safety and circularity.
TEX4GREEN brings together 17 partners from 8 countries, with ITENE (Spain) acting as the coordinator. The team from HAW Hamburg is involved as an expert for stakeholder engagement, communication and dissemination.
