University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST)

The University of Shanghai for Science and Technology evolved from the University of Shanghai (Shanghai College and Hujiang University) and the German Medical School for Chinese,* which were founded in 1906 and 1907 respectively. It has six campuses in Shanghai and has approximately 24,000 students, 17,000 at the undergraduate level and 7,500 at the postgraduate level, with a broad range of technical courses. It has 15 so-called schools, two departments of education, 56 undergraduate programs, eight disciplines leading to doctoral degrees, four postdoctoral research institutions, 17 Master's programmes and 11 so-called professional Master's programmes.

Life in Shanghai and at the USST

Shanghai is not only one of the world's largest metropolises and the twin city of Hamburg, but is also China's most important industrial city. The University of Shanghai for Science and Technology is one of China's elite universities, with six campuses in Shanghai. USST's main campus on Jungong Road is only 10 km, or a few stops by subway, from the city centre with Nanjing Road and the Bund. Shanghai is a great base to also explore surrounding cities such as Hangzhou and Suzhou.

The Shanghai-Hamburg College

HAW Hamburg and the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST) jointly founded the Shanghai-Hamburg College (SHC) in 1998. Today, around 300 students are taught by lecturers from HAW Hamburg and USST in three Bachelor's degree courses in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and International Business and Foreign Trade (IWA) (since 2002). The four-year Bachelor's courses with German-Chinese examination regulations are accredited by ASIIN.

The three study programs at the Shanghai-Hamburg College are organised bilingually (Chinese/German). The first year of study is dedicated to the acquisition of basic German language skills and concludes with the B1 certificate from the Goethe Institute. In the second and third years of study, one third of the specialised instruction (two modules per semester) is given in German by instructors from HAW Hamburg. In addition to the technical training, acquiring the Goethe B2 certificate in German is an important milestone for achieving the Bachelor's degree at both universities.

Since 2019, the joint development of e-learning modules has been supported by an ISAP third-party funded project supported by the German Academic and Exchange Service (DAAD).
