Sustainability has become a critical area of focus globally. As the world grapples with climate change, resource depletion, and environmental degradation, there is an urgent need for education systems to incorporate sustainability principles. Educators need innovative tools to teach these complex topics effectively, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) can provide some of these tools. AI can personalise learning experiences, making them more engaging and effective. For example, AI-powered tools can adapt content to match students' learning styles, provide real-time feedback, and facilitate immersive simulations of sustainable practices. These capabilities can significantly enhance students' understanding and retention of sustainability concepts.
AI also helps analyse large datasets to provide insights into environmental patterns and trends. Educators can use these insights to develop more accurate and relevant teaching materials. Additionally, AI can help students learn how to interpret and use data in their sustainability projects, fostering critical thinking and analytical skills. The future workforce will increasingly require skills in both AI and sustainability.
The "Symposium on Using Artificial Intelligence in Sustainability Teaching and Learning" is being prepared based on the perceived need to better understand how to leverage AI in sustainability efforts to the advantage of teaching staff and students.
The event is being organised by MEF University, Faculty of Economics, Administrative and Social Sciences, Istanbul, Türkiye, the European School of Sustainability Science and Research (ESSSR), the Inter-University Sustainable Development Research Programme (IUSDRP) and the European-North American Sustainability Research Consortium (ENASRC).
