What are the entry requirements for Bachelor applicants?

To study at Bachelor's level in Germany, international students must, in general, have a qualification that is equivalent to a German school-leaving certificate (Abitur or Fachhochschulreife). To find out if your qualifications are sufficient to study at the HAW Hamburg please send copies of your certificates to uni assist.

The following are the entry requirements for a Bachelor's programme at the HAW Hamburg:

fold faq Academic requirements - uni assist

All international student applicants*: You must apply online to uni assist (uni assist online portal) and send copies of your school-leaving certificate, etc. to uni assist BEFORE you can apply to the HAW Hamburg. They will check if your qualifications meet the entry requirements for a degree programme at our university and will provide you with a certificate (Vorprüfungsdokumentation - VPD) which you must include in your application to the HAW Hamburg. Please be advised that the process with uni assist can take 4-6 weeks. more information on uni assist Website

*Exceptions: You do not need to apply to uni assist if you have a Studienkolleg certificate (Feststellungsprüfung) or you have an Anerkennungsvermerk from a German public office with your school-leaving grade calculated into the German grading system. NOTE: At the HAW Hamburg the Vorprüfungsdokumentation (VPD) is valid for 2 years.

fold faq APS - Akademische Prüfstelle (China, Vietnam, Mongolia applicants)

Student applicants from China, Vietnam and Mongolia must also submit a certified copy of your APS certificate from the German embassy in Peking, Shanghai, Hanoi or Ulan Bator with their application to uni assist. APS Website

fold faq HAW Navigator (EU applicants)

Applicants from EU countries: For almost every German-language Bachelor programme there is a HAW Navigator self-test. It will give you an orientation about the contents of the programme and career fields and help you gauge if the degree programme is really a good match. If your chosen degree programme has a HAW Navigator self-test, then you must take it before you can apply online. It is an entry requirement. As the tests are not graded this will not influence your chances of getting a place at the HAW Hamburg. Link to the HAW Navigator

All international students: Applicants for the design degree programmes at the HAW Hamburg must also take an Artistic Aptitude Test [künstlerische Eignungsprüfung].
