Applying for a Bachelor's programme at the HAW Hamburg

As an international student it isn't always easy to understand the application process in a foreign country. We hope this step-by-step guide will help you make a successful application to our university.

1. Winter or summer semester: Find out when your chosen degree programme starts and when the application deadline is by looking at the table of degree programmes. Follow the link.

2. certified copies (amtliche Beglaubigung): The copies of your school and university certificates as well as your language certificates and APS certificate (if relevant) must be officially certified before you can send them to uni assist. If they are not in German or English they must also have officially certified translations. Please do not send originals with your application.

3. uni-assist: Send your certificates to be reviewed by uni assist BEFORE you apply online to the HAW Hamburg. You will get a certificate (Vorprüfungsdokumentation) from uni assist that you must enclose with your application to us. Please apply early as the process can take 4-6 weeks. Follow the link for the uni assist website.
Exceptions:
You do not need to apply to uni assist if you have a Studienkolleg certificate (Feststellungsprüfung) or an Anerkennungsvermerk from a German public office with your school-leaving grade calculated into the German grading system.

4. APS: Students from China, Mongolia or Vietnam must get your certificates reviewed by the Akademische Prüfstelle (APS) at the German embassy in Peking, Shanghai, Ulan Bator or Hanoi. Please send a certified copy of the APS certificate with your application to uni assist. Follow the link for the APS website.

5. Hochschulstart: For some Bachelor programmes (not Information Engineering) you have to register with Hochschulstart before you can apply online at the HAW Hamburg. When you register with Hochschulstart you will get a user-ID and a BAN, which you need to submit when you apply on our online system. Please get your VPD from uni assist BEFORE you register with hochschulstart. Follow the link to see if your chosen degree programme is listed for Hochschulstart registration and for more information.

5. German language: If you are applying for a degree programme that is in German and German is not your first language, then you must submit a language certificate with your application to the HAW Hamburg. Follow the link for more information. 

6. English language: If you are applying for a degree programme that is in English and English is not your first language, then you must include a language certificate with your application to the HAW Hamburg. Follow the link for more information.

7. Artistic Aptitude Test: Applicants for our Design programmes have to complete an artistic aptitude test in November before they can apply online for the summer semester. To apply for the aptitude test you must submit a portfolio of your work in September directly to the Department of Design. Follow the link for more information (in German).

8. Changing universities or programmes: If you are already enrolled in a degree programme at the HAW Hamburg or at a different German university, you must change programmes in the first three semesters. After that it may be possible, but generally only if we accept courses that you have completed as credit for our programme. 

9. Apply online: The online application process is open only during the designated application periods. In general, 1. June - 15. July and 1. December - 15. January. Exception: Information Engineering (1. April . 31. May). Please check the degree information page for your application period. Follow the link for the online application process.

10. A complete application: In general you must send the following documents to the HAW Hamburg Admissions Office:

  • HAW Hamburg application form (print online application)
  • copy of (a) UNI-Assist certificate (Vorprüfungsdokumentationor (b) certified copy of Studienkolleg certificate or (c) certified copy of Anerkennungsvermerk
  • APS certificate for student applicants from China, Mongolia and Vietnam*
  • certified copies of your secondary school/university certificates
  • certified translation of your school/university certificates, if they are not in German or English**
  • certified copy of your language certificate (for German or English, depending on the language of instruction of the chosen degree programme)
  • resumé
  • statement of motivation about why you want to study at the HAW Hamburg (1 page text)
  • copies of references or certificates from internships or voluntary work


* not necessary if you had your APS certificate checked by uni assist
** not necessary if you have a VPD from uni assist

2. HAW Navigator: Complete the self-test in the HAW Navigator for your chosen degree programme before you apply online. This test is a prerequisite for most of the Bachelor programmes at the HAW Hamburg (exception: Information Engineering does not require this)

Application deadlines

The academic year at the HAW Hamburg is split into two semesters and for most of our degree programmes you can apply to start in the winter or the summer semester:

Winter semester: (Sept. - Feb.)       Application period*: 1. June - 15. July
Summer semester: (March - July)   Application period: 1. Dec. - 15. January
(*Exception: Information Engineering: 1. April - 31. May: non-EU students; 01. June - 15. July: EU students)

The list of Bachelor programmes tells you when your programme starts. It is only possible to apply online during the application periods. Applications received after the deadlines will not be processed.

Hochschulstart

HAW Hamburg participates in the central German application system Hochschulstart, so if you want to apply for one of the following degree programmes, please register first with uni-assist for the VPD, then with hochschulstart.de and then apply online to the HAW Hamburg:

  • Foreign Trade/International Management (Außenwirtschaft)
  • Library Management (Bibliotheks- & Informationsmanagement)
  • Logistics (TBWL/Logistik)

HAW Navigator Self-Tests

For most Bachelor degree programmes (not Information Engineering) you also have to do a HAW Navigator Self-Test for the subject you want to study. This must be completed before applying online.

International Student Applicants Jury

Non-EU international Bachelor student applicants can increase their chances of getting a place by submitting a resumé, statement of motivation, letters of recommendation for internships, voluntary work, certificates for additional languages, etc. For more information

Hardship Policy

If there are specific reasons that you have to study in Hamburg (health, family, etc.) you can apply to be considered within the hardship policy regulations. You can do this as part of the online application. In addition you must submit together with your application a letter explaining the reasons why you believe you should be considered, together with certified papers confirming the hardship reasons.
