Applying for a Bachelor's programme at the HAW Hamburg

As an international student it isn't always easy to understand the application process in a foreign country. Please read the step-by-step guide BEFORE you start the online application process.

1. Winter or summer semester?: Find out when your chosen degree programme starts and when the application deadline is by looking at the table of degree programmes. Follow the link.

2. Language skills: Please check if you have sufficient language skills to study in your chosen programme.   German language    English language

3. certified copies (amtliche Beglaubigung): The copies of your school and university certificates as well as your language certificates and APS certificate (if relevant) must be officially certified by a consulate or other official body. If the certificates are not in German or English, you will also need officially certified translations. These are required for your application to uni assist (s. Step 5).
NOTE: Please do not send originals with your application.

4. APS: Students from China, Mongolia or Vietnam must get their certificates reviewed by the Akademische Prüfstelle (APS) at the German embassy in Peking, Shanghai, Ulan Bator or Hanoi. Please send a certified copy of the APS certificate with your application to uni assist. Follow the link for the APS website.

5. uni-assist: If you completed your school education outside of Germany, you must send officially certified copies of your certificates to be reviewed by uni assist BEFORE you can apply online to the HAW Hamburg. You will get a certificate - Vorprüfungsdokumentation (VPD) - from uni assist that you must include with your application to us. Please apply early as the process can take 4-6 weeks. Follow the link for the uni-assist website.

Exceptions: You do not need a VPD from uni assist if you have a certificate (Feststellungsprüfung) from a Studienkolleg or you have an Anerkennungsvermerk from a German public office with your school-leaving grade calculated into the German grading system.

6. Hochschulstart: For some Bachelor programmes (not Information Engineering) you have to register with Hochschulstart before you can apply online at the HAW Hamburg. When you register with Hochschulstart you will get a user-ID and a BAN, which you need to submit when you apply on our online system. Please get your VPD from uni assist BEFORE you register with hochschulstart. Artistic Aptitude Test: Applicants for our Design programmes have to complete an artistic aptitude test in November before they can apply online for the summer semester. To apply for the aptitude test you must submit a portfolio of your work in September directly to the Department of Design. Follow the link for more information (in German).

8. Changing universities or programmes: If you are already enrolled in a degree programme at the HAW Hamburg or at a different German university, you must change programmes in the first three semesters. After that it may be possible, but generally only if we accept courses that you have completed as credit for our programme. 

9. Apply online: The online application process is open only during the designated application periods. In general, 1. June - 15. July and 1. December - 15. January. Exception: Information Engineering (1. April - 31. May). Please remember to print off your online application, sign it and send it together with the other required papers to the HAW Hamburg with the post. Getting a place: Student applicants from non-EU countries are awarded places by a HAW Hamburg committee. The final grade of your school-leaving certificate is the most important criteria, but you can improve your chances of  getting a place by getting additional points for other things, such as internships, excellent language skills, previous studies at another university, etc. See the flyer for more information by clicking on the link.

11. A complete application: In general you must send the following documents to the HAW Hamburg Admissions Office by post:

  • HAW Hamburg online application (print online application and sign it)
  • copy of (a) Vorprüfungsdokumentation (VPD) from uni assist or (b) certified copy of the Feststellungsprüfung from the Studienkolleg with a certified copy of the VPD you submitted when applying for the Studienkolleg or (c) certified copy of Anerkennungsvermerk
  • APS certificate for student applicants from China, Mongolia and Vietnam*
  • copy of your language certificate (for German or English, depending on the language of instruction of the chosen degree programme)
  • resumé, statement of motivation about why you want to study at the HAW Hamburg (1 page text) and copies of references or certificates from internships or voluntary work, etc. other documents for the HAW committee


* not necessary if you had your APS certificate checked by uni assist

Application deadlines

The academic year at the HAW Hamburg is split into two semesters and for most of our degree programmes you can apply to start in the winter or the summer semester:

Winter semester: (Sept. - Feb.)       Application period*: 1. June - 15. July
Summer semester: (March - July)   Application period: 1. Dec. - 15. January
(*Exception: Information Engineering: 1. April - 31. May: non-EU students; 01. June - 15. July: EU students)

The list of Bachelor programmes tells you when your programme starts. It is only possible to apply online during the application periods. Applications received after the deadlines will not be processed.

HAW Hamburg Committee for non-EU applicants

Places on our degree programmes for non-EU applicants are awarded by a special HAW Hamburg committee. They award points for your school-leaving grade but also for internships, excellent language skills, previous university studies, etc. We advise you to make the most of this opportunity and submit certificates, reference letters, etc. with your printed online application to underline your skills. This way you can increase your chance of getting a place. For more information
