Getting a place in a Bachelor's programme

- Bachelor applicants from EU countries are treated as German applicants. You can find more information (in German) about how the places are awarded here.

- Bachelor applicants from non-EU countries: At the HAW Hamburg 10% of the Bachelor places are reserved for students from non-EU countries. The places are awarded by a committee made up of professors and members of the university administration. They award points according to the following criteria:

school-leaving grade max. of 40 points
work experience relevant to degree programme max. of 10 points
German language higher than the min. requirement max. of 10 points
statement of motivation max. of 5 points
other criteria, e.g. voluntary work, university credit, additional languages max. of 10 points

Applicants from non-EU countries must reach a minimum of 45 points to be short-listed for a place on a Bachelor's programme. If more than one applicant get the same number of points, lots are drawn to decide the place on the short-list. You can read the the guidelines for the selection of international applicants here.

Tip: In order to get points for work experience, internships, languages and other special skills relevant to your chosen degree programme, include this information in your resumé and write about it in your statement of motivation. Include copies of reference letters and certificates that prove you have completed these things with your application. Good luck - we hope you get a place!

  • What are your key skills that are relevant to your chosen degree programme? What experience is proof of this?
  • Have you completed an internship, vocational training or a project in the field of your degree programme? If yes, tell us about it.
  • Have you done voluntary work? If yes, tell us about it.
  • Why should we choose you?
