Hamburg Welcome Weeks: An orientation programme for guest students and freshmen to get to know Hamburg and the other new students.

* In most departments the higher level classes will start in the first week of the semester; in some departments the first week of the semester may be an orientation week for the freshmen or first-semester students. Please check with your department.

Public Holidays: On public holidays shops, banks and post offices are shut in Germany. There is increased traffic on roads, rail and at airports as Germans use these days for long weekends or short breaks.

Note for Bachelor degree-seeking students:
Some engineering programmes offer a pre-semester maths programme to introduce first-semester Bachelor students to the level of maths required for the programmes. You will get information about this with your letter of acceptance.

»The class structure is very unlike anything I have experienced in American universities. There are no weekly graded assignments or tests; the only grade you receive all semester is based upon projects or exams during the final two weeks of school
