Living in Hamburg

Finding accommodation in Hamburg is difficult. We therefore recommend that you start looking for a place to live in good time. If you have friends or relatives in Hamburg ask them to help.

Halls of residences

Most of the halls of residence in Hamburg are run by the Studierendenwerk Hamburg and offer affordable accommodation for students. Generally, students have their own room in an apartment which they share with other students - bathroom and kitchen are shared. The monthly rent for a room in hall starts at roughly 220 Euro [including heating, water and electricity].

New students can apply at the earliest three months before the start of their degree programme. Further information about the halls of residence as well as the application form can be found on the Studierendenwerk Hamburg Website.

Studierendenwerk Hamburg Service Package
Students can apply for the Service Package, which guarantees a place in a hall of residence and support from student tutors in the halls of residences. Applications can be made online on the Studierendenwerk Hamburg website.

Private halls of residences
Hamburg also has a small number of private halls of residences that also offer value-for-money accommodation for students. You can find a list on the Studierendenwerk Hamburg website.

Flat-sharing (WGs)

Sharing a flat is a popular alternative to a hall of residence in Hamburg. In German it is called WG; short for Wohngemeinschaft. The following websites can help you find students who are looking to share or who are looking for a sublet because they are going abroad for a semester.

HousingAnywhere
HousingAnywhere is a student-to-student internet platform, where students who are going abroad for a semester can sublet their rooms to incoming guest students. The HAW Hamburg has a cooperation with HousingAnywhere and only students with a valid university e-mail address can post their rooms on this platform. This should ensure fair prices, good quality of rooms and no scams, though the HAW Hamburg does not take responsibility for rooms offered and rental contracts are between students.

»The student apartment location (Berliner Tor) was very nice. It was on the main campus, near the grocery store and also very close to one of the major transportation terminals.« - William Addison, USA
