Registration as a student 


To register for each new semester all you need to do is pay the semester contribution by the specified deadline. On the day payment is transferred, you can have a new "valid until" data printed on the rewritable strip of the chip card. This is done at a validation station. 

Deadlines for re-registration:

  • Winter semester: 1 June - 31 August
  • Summer semester: 1 December - 28/29 February


IMPORTANT: From winter semester 2019/20 the deadlines for re-registration will change:

  • winter semester: 15. August
  • summer semester: 15. February

The university may remove you from the student register (de-register you) if you fail to register in time. Re-registration will then only possible within a certain appeal period and a fee will be charged.

IMPORTANT: with your payment you must include a payment reference (Verwendungszweck) that tells our system who made the payment. This reference is specific to your personal student details and without it we cannot automatically book your payment to your account. It is made up of the following elements:

Holiday semester

If you are unable to attend more than half of the classes in a given semester and there are specific grounds for your absence, you can apply for a holiday semester. 

Reasons for holiday semester:

  • illness
  • study abroad
  • military service or alternative to military service

A holiday semester will not be granted in the following cases:

  • before passing all classes in your first year
  • if doing so could prevent you from completing your degree in time (for example if the programme is being discontinued)


  • illness
  • caring for a close relative
  • pregnancy
  • childcare

Changing personal details

You can submit the following applications or make changes to the following personal details yourself in HELIOS:

  • holiday semester (please include relevant documents) 
  • semester in industry/internship (please include relevant documents)
  • change of address
  • de-registration

The following changes must be made by the Students Registrar Office (Studierendensekretariat). Please apply to them in writing and include the relevant documents (no specific forms required): 

  • change of name (please include the extract from the family register) 
  • change of health insurer
  • re-registration for classes after a holiday semester
  • re-registration for classes after a semester in industry

Please send applications including the relevant documents to the Student Registrar's Office (Studierendensekretariat).
