Degree Completion Grants for international students

International students at the HAW Hamburg can apply for financial support to complete their degree. There are two types of grants: one is offered by the DAAD (application to the HAW Hamburg International Office) and the second is offered by the City of Hamburg (application to the Studierendenwerk Hamburg). You can apply for both to increase your chances; though it is only possible to receive a grant from one of the sponsors.

 

1. DAAD Grant

Application requirements:

Applicants must meet the following criteria in order to apply for a grant:

  • You are an international Bachelor or Master student at the HAW Hamburg.
  • You are planning to complete your thesis and finish your studies within 6 months after applying for the grant.
  • You have good grades.
  • You can prove that you are in financial need (you have to prove that your own income and assets do not cover your expenses during the final phase of your studies.)
  • You are not entitled to BAföG, i.e. you do not fulfil the requirements of § 8 of the Bundesausbildungsförderungsgesetz (BAföG) (If you are unsure please contact the BAföG Amt. You should definitely do this if you do not have a residency permit according to §16 Aufenthaltsgesetz or are an EU citizen.)

Application documents:

The following documents must be submitted online to the HAW Hamburg International Office:

  • Letter of Motivation (max. 1 page): Why should you receive this grant?
  • Study plan for the upcoming semester/year (should include information about modules and credits to complete, topic of your thesis and when you plan to register/hand in your thesis)
  • Curriculum Vitae (max. 2 pages)
  • Transcript of records
  • Confirmation of enrolment (Immatrikulationsbescheinigung, download from HELIOS)
  • Copy of your residence permit according to § 16 (for non-EU citizen) or ID/passport (for EU citizens)
  • Confirmation from the chairman of the examination board (PAV) (HAW form)

 

The following documents have to be submitted in person:

  • Financial Situation formHAW form
  • Copies of your bank statements for the last three months (Please provide all accounts you own. It has to be transparent how you finance yourself.)

 

Please hand in those documents during our drop-in hours or make an appointment.

 

Application Deadlines 2019:

30 September 2019 (Funding period October - December 2019)

The length of funding depends on the date you plan to submit your thesis and finish your studies.


2. City of Hamburg Grant

Application requirements:

Applicants must meet the following criteria in order to apply for a grant:

  • You are an international Bachelor or Master student at the HAW Hamburg.
  • You will be finishing your studies within 12 months after applying for the grant.
  • You have good grades.
  • You can prove that you are in financial need (you have to prove that your own income and assets do not cover your expenses during the final phase of your studies.)
  • You are not entitled to BAföG, i.e. you do not fulfil the requirements of § 8 of the Bundesausbildungsförderungsgesetz (BAföG) (If you are unsure please contact the BAföG Amt. You should definitely do this if you do not have a residency permit according to §16 Aufenthaltsgesetz or are an EU citizen.)

 

The amount of the financial support is based on the financial situation of the applicant. The maximum amount is calculated according to the current maximum BAföG rate (735€/month).

Application documents:

The application form is available directly from the Studierendenwerk Hamburg (Grindelallee 9) and your complete application must be submitted there.

The International Office also recommends a personal consultation before each application. Please come to one of our Drop-In Hours on Thursdays between 2:00 and 5:00 p.m. or make an appointment.

Application Deadlines 2019:

30. September 2019 (winter semester 2019/20)

31. March 2020 (summer semester 2020)

 

Funding is granted for one semester. If you want to extend the grant, you need to apply again.

NOTE: You can apply for more than one programme to increase your chances of getting financial support. It is, however, not possible to be awarded a grant for more than one programme.
