Emergency Financial Aid

International students at the HAW Hamburg, who are in an emergency financial situation, can apply to one of the following emergency aid funds for help. Each fund has its own criteria, but in general they all ask to see a copy of your transcript of records and your bank statements. They are not able to offer regular financial support throughout your studies but instead are meant as one-off aid in a time of financial crisis:

VDFAS - Verein der Förderer

The VDFAS is a university association founded by professors and (former) employees of the HAW Hamburg that offers international students enrolled at the HAW Hamburg support in a financial crisis. Students must have completed at least two semesters of study.

The International Office of the HAW Hamburg coordinates this work, so if you want to apply to the VDFAS, please make an appointment for a counselling session. The International Office will supply you with an application form. You will need to submit the following:

  • Application form
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Letter explaining in detail why you are in a financial crisis
  • HELIOS or StiSys printout of your grades
  • Copies of the last three bank statements
  • Proof of enrolment (Immatrikulationsbescheinigung) at the HAW Hamburg

Based on your situation the VDFAS can award one-off payments of a maximum of 400 Euro. Applications can be made a maximum of three times during the whole degree programme.

Ecumenical Emergency Fund

The Ecumenical Emergency Fund helps international Bachelor or Master's student from OECD countries in a financial crisis situation. They offer financial support in important phases of your degree programme, e.g. unpaid internships, final exams funding.

If you would like to submit an application you will need the following:

  • written letter of application with your name, address, date and signature
  • detailed letter with the reasons for the financial crisis
  • curriculum vitae
  • application form (available from the Diakonisches Werk or the International Office)
  • copy of your residence permit
  • complete bank statements of all bank accounts of the last three months (1. bis 31. of each month) or a bank statement of the last 90 days
  • proof of enrolment (Immatrikulationsbescheinigung) at the HAW Hamburg
  • study plan presenting how you are planning your studies
  • in cases of illness a letter from the doctor
  • proof of the current status of your studies (appointment with the Studienfachberater for your degree programme and the International Office is necessary)
  • proof of voluntary work if you are applying more than once

The Ecumenical Fund will ask for a reference from the International Office of the HAW Hamburg, so please make an appointment with the HAW Hamburg International Office BEFORE you make an appointment with the Diakonisches Werk. IMPORTANT: Please bring your transcript (HELIOS print-out) with you.
