Degree Completion Grants for international students

International students at the HAW Hamburg can apply for financial support to complete their degree. There are two types of grants: one is offered by the DAAD (application to the HAW Hamburg International Office) and the second is offered by the City of Hamburg (application to the Studierendenwerk Hamburg). You can apply for both to increase your chances; though it is only possible to receive a grant from one of the sponsors.

The amount of the financial support is based on the financial situation of the applicant. The maximum amount is calculated according to the current maximum BAföG rate.

Application requirements:

Applicants must meet the following criteria in order to apply for a grant:

  • You are an international Bachelor or Master student at the HAW Hamburg.
  • You will be finishing your Bachelor studies in less than 12 months after applying for the scholarship. Bachelor applicants who only have to complete their thesis will be given priority. Master students may apply if they only need to complete their Master thesis.
  • You have good grades.
  • You are financing your studies on your own and can prove that you are in financial need (you have to prove that your own income and assets do not cover your expenses during the final phase of your studies.)
  • You are not entitled to BAföG, i.e. you do not fulfil the requirements of § 8 of the Bundesausbildungsförderungsgesetz (BAföG) (If you are unsure please contact the BAföG Amt. You should definitely do this if you do not have a residency permit according to §16 Aufenthaltsgesetz or are an EU citizen.)

Application documents:

1. DAAD Grant: The following documents must be submitted online to the HAW Hamburg International Office:

  • Letter of Motivation with a study plan for the upcoming semester/year (should include information about modules and credits to complete and when you plan to register/hand in your thesis)
  • Curriculum Vitae (max. 2 pages)
  • Transcript of records
  • Confirmation of enrolment (Immatrikulationsbescheinigung, download from HELIOS)
  • Copy of your residence permit according to § 16 (for non-EU citizen) or ID/passport (for EU citizens) and/or BAföG rejection letter
  • Confirmation from the chairman of the examination board (PAV) (HAW form)
