Scholarships for international HAW Hamburg Master students

The HAW Hamburg awards scholarships for academic merit to its international Master students*. 

IMPORTANT: You need to be currently enrolled at the HAW Hamburg to apply for the scholarship.

1. Excellence Scholarships

Scholarships:

We award scholarships of up to 1.800 Euros per semester. An application for a further semester is possible.

Application requirements:

Applicants must meet the following criteria in order to apply for the scholarship:

  • You are an international Master student at the HAW Hamburg and are studying in the Regelstudienzeit* (*the number of semesters defined for the completion of your degree). (If you are at the end of your studies, meaning that you only have one semester left until you finish your studies, you can apply for the Degree Completion Grant.)
  • You completed your school education outside of Germany or successfully graduated from a Studienkolleg
  • You successfully completed a Bachelor's degree
  • Your GPA is at least 2,5.
  • You are not entitled to BAföG, i.e. you do not fulfil the requirements of § 8 of the Bundesausbildungsförderungsgesetz (BAföG) (If you are unsure please contact the BAföG Amt. You should definitely do this if you do not have a residency permit according to §16 Aufenthaltsgesetz or are an EU citizen)
  • *Students studying the degree programmes Public Health, Public Management, Social and Health Management may not apply for the scholarship

Application documents:

The following documents must be submitted for the application:

1. For an application in the first semester:

  • Letter of Motivation* (max. 1 page)
  • Curriculum Vitae (max. 2 pages)
  • Letter of recommendation from a professor from the university where you completed your Bachelor's degree(HAW form)
  • Copy of your uni-assist VPD document that clearly states the GPA of your Bachelor's degree (only if you completed your Bachelor's degree outside of Germany) 
  • Copy of your Bachelor's certificate that clearly states the GPA of your Bachelor's degree (only if you completed your Bachelor's degree at a German university)
  • Confirmation of enrolment (Immatrikulationsbescheinigung, download from HELIOS)
  • Copy of your residence permit (for non-EU citizen) or ID/passport (for EU citizens)
  • Bank details (HAW form)

 

2. For an application after the first semester or for an extension:

  • Letter of Motivation* (max. 1 page)
  • Curriculum Vitae (max. 2 pages)
  • Letter of recommendation from a professor at the HAW Hamburg (HAW form)
  • Confirmation from the chairman of the examination board (HAW form)
  • Confirmation of enrolment (Immatrikulationsbescheinigung, download from HELIOS)
  • Transcript of records
  • Copy of your residence permit (for non-EU citizen) or ID/passport (for EU citizens)
  • Bank details (HAW form)

 

Application periods 2019:

Summer semester: 1 April - 30 April 2019

Winter semester: 1 October- 30 October 2019

Applications received before or after this period can unfortunately not be accepted.

2. Scholarships for highly committed students

The HAW Hamburg awards up to 5 scholarships for highly committed international degree seeking students per semester. The grants are sponsored by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

Scholarships:

We award scholarships of up to 1.800 Euros per semester. An application for a further two semesters is possible.

Application requirements:

Applicants must meet the following criteria in order to apply for the scholarship:

  • You are an international student at the HAW Hamburg (You completed your school education outside of Germany or successfully graduated from a Studienkolleg.)
  • You have successfully completed at least one semester at the HAW Hamburg
  • You have a GPA of at least 2,5.
  • You are committed voluntarily (Proof required)
    • at least since one semester in an international context at the HAW Hamburg (e.g. at different programs/events of the International Office like the weBuddy programme, the Culture Café, Intercultural Trainings, Presentation of Nations, Language Tandems; as a member of ASTA, FSR or other student committees)
    • You have previously been voluntarily committed in an international or other context at the HAW Hamburg for at least one year (Proof required)
  • You do not receive any other financial support from the HAW Hamburg during the scholarship period
  • Your own income does not exceed 650 Euro/month during the scholarship period

Application Documents:

The following documents must be submitted online:

  • Curriculum Vitae (max. 2 pages focusing mainly on your voluntary commitment and your academic achievements)
  • Letter of Motivation (max. 2 pages)

    • Why do you deserve the scholarship for highly committed international degree seeking students?

  • Proof of your voluntary commitment (type, scope and duration of the commitment, e.g. a letter of recommendation of a person who can confirm your commitment)
  • Transcript of records
  • Confirmation of enrolment (Immatrikulationsbescheinigung, download from HELIOS)
  • Copy of your residence permit (for non-EU citizen) or ID/passport (for EU citizens)
  • Bank details (HAW form)

* Letter of Motivation should include the following:

- why did you choose your degree programme at the HAW Hamburg?
- why do you think you should be considered for a scholarship?


NOTE:
You can apply for more than one programme to increase your chances of getting a scholarship. It is however, not possible to be awarded a scholarship for more than one programme; i.e. you cannot get an Academic Merit scholarship as well as a Final Year scholarship.
