Semester contribution

All students have to pay a semester contribution. It is made up of the following items:

Semester ticket 173.10 Euro
Studierendenwerk Hamburg 75.00 Euro
HAW Hamburg administration fee 50.00 Euro
Students' Union (AStA) 18.50 Euro
Students Hardship Fund 4.50 Euro
Total 321.10 Euro*

Semester Ticket & semester ticket refund

The semester ticket is a public transport ticket, which allows students unlimited travel on Hamburg's public transport system of underground trains and buses.

If you are not in Hamburg for a semester; e.g. study semester abroad or internship outside of Hamburg, you can apply to have the semester ticket part of your semester contribution reimbursed. Please complete the following steps to get the refund:

1. Pay your semester contribution to the university

2. Apply to the Studierendenwerk Hamburg for a refund with the following papers: application form, proof of not being in Hamburg, e.g. copy of internship contract, letter of acceptance from partner university

3. When your refund application is approved by the Studierendenwerk Hamburg you will receive a confirmation letter

4. Give the confirmation letter to the Chip Card Office and they will delete the dates on your chip card. They will also provide you with a letter of confirmation which you need to give to the Studierendenwerk Hamburg

5. On receiving the letter of confirmation the Studierendenwerk Hamburg will refund the semester ticket

Winter semester: 31. August
Summer semester: 28. February
