Strategic research: IT, Communication & Media

Research in this strategic area takes place in the Faculty of Engineering & Computer Science and in the Faculty of Design, Media & Information. The different approaches to information technology and its uses are reflected in the wide range of research topics. Increasingly projects are interdisciplinary with research groups profiting from the synergy effects of different viewpoints and expertise.

Department of Computer Science

The Department of Computer Science has research projects in ambient intelligence, virtual/ augmented reality, multi-agent systems, interacting multi-media systems, wearable computing, etc. The university has its own "Living Place", a 140 sqm smart apartment with its own lab, where the research group develops and tests new intelligent concepts for IT-based urban living. Projects to develop our expertise in virtual reality and multi-agent systems are carried out in the department's multi-media lab.

Faculty of Design, Media & Information

Research in the Faculty DMI focuses on knowledge access and accessibility and the development of the internet. The Department of Information looks at mobile communication in the internet, search engines and e-learning with mobile content as well as the developments in interface design, knowledge organisation and usability. Associated with the HAW Hamburg is the International Media Center (IMC), a leading German academic platform of its kind.
