Accommodation & Housing in Hamburg

Halls of Residences

Universities in Germany do not have their own halls of residences. They are run by the organisation »Studierendenwerk Hamburg«. The HAW Hamburg gets a limited number of rooms in halls of residences, that we can make available to guest students from our partner universities.

The monthly rent costs between 277 and 350 Euro and includes bedding, bed clothes, kitchen utensils and internet connection. You have your own room and share kitchen and bathroom with a small number of students. Housing does not include a meal plan, but cheap meals are available in the cafeterias on campus (1.85 - 4.95 Euro/meal). Most students learn to cook during their semester abroad and share meals with other students in their apartment. It is a great way to get to know people.

Priority is given to students from overseas and the rooms are awarded on a first come, first serve basis, so it is important to apply early. The housing application form is part of the general application forms for guest students. Due to a very high demand for rooms, it is only possible to get a room for one semester, even if you are planning to come to Hamburg for two semesters.

If you do not get one of the "Kontingent" rooms through the university, you can apply directly to the halls of residences and ask if they have "Gästezimmer" (guest rooms) available. It is important to state that you are not eligible for a "Kontingentzimmer". You can find a list of halls with guest rooms here:
Studierendenwerk Hamburg Guest rooms. Even if the website says "no availability" it is often worth asking, as there can be last-minute cancellations.

Flat-sharing (WGs)

If you want to live privately or we aren't able to offer you a room in hall, you can look for rooms on the following websites:

HousingAnywhere
HousingAnywhere is a student-to-student internet platform, where students who are going abroad for a semester can sublet their rooms to incoming guest students. The HAW Hamburg has a cooperation with HousingAnywhere and only students with a valid university e-mail address can post their rooms on this platform. This should ensure fair prices, good quality of rooms and no scams, though the HAW Hamburg does not take responsibility for rooms offered and rental contracts are between students.

»The student apartment location (Berliner Tor) was very nice. It was on the main campus, near the grocery store and also very close to one of the major transportation terminals
