German Classes for HAW Hamburg students

Some of you will be studying in an English-language degree programme and may know little or no German. Making the most of living in a foreign country includes learning the language. The HAW Hamburg offers German language courses at Campus Berliner Tor in collaboration with the Volkshochschule Hamburg.

Note: Please be advised that these classes are open only to students enrolled at the HAW Hamburg. If you are not yet enrolled, please scroll down to see other language school options in Hamburg:

German as a foreign language: 8 courses (levels*: A1, A2, B1, B2 - overview of German classes and other language courses at HAW Hamburg)
Common European Framework of Reference for Languages

Time period:
Mid. October 2019 - mid. January 2020. (12 dates)

Credits: The Volkshochschule will award you a certificate of 4 ECTS, if you participate in at least 80% of the course, pass the exam and get at least two course assessments during the semester. Your Department decides if these ECTS can go towards your degree. Please speak to the Study Advisor.

Costs: 45 class units (45 minutes) cost in total 110 Euros. The HAW Hamburg will cover the cost of your German class. If you are trying to register for one of the German courses, please use a random series of numbers and include made-up banking information for the fields asking for your banking information, otherwise the form will unfortunately not be processed. You can of course also provide your real banking information but will not be charged for this course.

Registration: In order to register you must take a placement test. This is not necessary if you are taking the A1.1 total beginners' class. The test consists of a written exam and a short oral exam and takes place on 26th September (Stiftstr. 69, Building H, Room 3.05, 3rd floor) and on 1st October from 4-6 p.m. in the Students' Centre (Stiftstr. 69, Buidling G, Room 124, 1st floor). You will need to register in advance for the oral placement exam. Please take the written placement test before the oral test, print out the result and bring it with you to the oral test. You can do the written test here:

More information here: Volkshochschule Website

The online registration will start on 23rd September (12 p.m.) for beginners' courses and on 2nd October (6 p.m.) for advanced courses at: Online registration. Each course has 20 places. Places will be distributed according to the time of your registration (first come, first served). If fewer than 10 people register, the course will not take place. If you haven't received your placement result our certificate before the registration process starts, you can hand it in after your application (just write a short note in the remarks field). Note: Please use a random series of numbers and made-up banking information for the fields asking for your banking information, as the course is free for HAW Hamburg students.
