Automotive Engineering - Exchange students

With its international brands Porsche, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen Germany's automotive industry is world famous and a driving force of the German export industry. The HAW Hamburg is one of a very small number of German universities who have an Automotive Engineering degree programme at both Bachelor and Master level. Our degrees have a strong focus on design and our professors have all worked in industry before joining the university. Close cooperation with the automotive industry ensures practice-oriented degree programmes, an insight into the latest market developments and excellent career opportunities.

Each summer semester (March - July) exchange students from our partner universities can get an insight into the expertise of German automotive engineering and can choose from the following classes in English:

Automotive Engineering - courses in English

  • Introduction to body in white design
  • Introduction to commercial vehicle design
  • Drive train design
  • Finite element method (FEM)
  • Engineering Design team project
  • Automotive Engineering research project

Further information about the content of the classes can be found in the module handbook.

NOTE: Exchange students with B2 German can also take other classes offered in German in our BSc Automotive Engineering programme.

Students may also be able to take classes from aeronautical engineering, mechanical engineering and information engineering (all classes within the Faculty of Engineering & Computer Science) if lecture schedules and capacity allow.

HAWKS Racing: During your studies in Hamburg you can join our very successful Formula Student Racing Team, getting hands-on experience in building a racing car and participating in the races in Europe: HAWKS Racing Website

»As an engineer you have to learn to adapt to new situations and continuously add to your knowledge. That is exactly what I was hoping for from my study abroad: New and unique experiences. In California I study Mechanical Engineering. But it was only here - as part of the HAWKS Racing team - that I discovered what I was really interested in: automotive engineering and composites.«
