Social Work and Early Education - Exchange Students

The Department of Social Work is located on our main campus Berliner Tor in St. Georg; a vivid, multi-cultural quarter in the heart of the City of Hamburg. With its 1.8 million inhabitants Hamburg is Germany's second largest city after Berlin and an international port. Living and studying in Hamburg therefore provides a wide range of insights into different cultures and lifestyles as well as into the social problems and their solutions in a modern urban community. 

The Department of Social Work offers the undergraduate programmes »Social Work« and »Education and Learning in Childhood«, preparing students for a diverse range of social occupations and work in early childhood education. They reflect the complexity of social work in a modern society. Each summer semester (March - July) exchange students can get an insight into this expertise and take courses in English. The following classes are offered in the summer semester:

Social Work / Education & Learning in Childhood - courses in English

  • Child abuse & neglect
  • Child protection & family treatment*
  • Children's books
  • Community work (Community Organizing)
  • Evidence-based policy & practice in early education
  • Global mental health**
  • Intercultural communication* (special module)
  • Media Literacy
  • Morality, social justice & principles of human relationships in modern societies
  • Qualitative & quantitative research methods
  • Strengths-based interventions with children and families*
  • Supporting language and communication in early childhood

NOTE: courses can change from one year to the next         * block seminar ** not in summer semester 2020

Exchange students can also take classes in Nursing & Healthcare. More information here.

In addition, if capacity allows, exchange students can also take "Project Management" and/or "Working in multicultural groups" at the Faculty of Life Sciences at the Hamburg-Bergedorf Campus. Nutrition & Health module handbook. Please be advised that the Bergedorf campus is 30 minutes from the Berliner Tor campus.
