Zusammenfassung: The increasing spread of lithium-ion batteries requires a better understanding of the cell state. Especially for systems that need a high reliability or possess a high-power output, cell-monitoring is mandatory. Current electrical methods like voltage metering or coulomb counting show a significant deviation from actual conditions. Therefore, alternative concepts for state-of-charge and state-of- health determination are necessary to get non-electrical information from the cell. Here, the optical observation of the electrode is an interesting field of research as the optical change of the electrode materials during cycling can reveal their current state. For graphite a color change is well-known and can be observed by the implementation of refractive-index-sensitive optical fibers. For the lithium iron phosphate cathode, marker materials indium tin oxide or antimony tin oxide were added to achieve a noticeable change of brightness of the electrode. This effect was also observed with a fiber optical system utilizing the evanescent field of an etched optical fiber with a micro-sized cladding. By this means, a cell with an optical fiber in each electrode was assembled and the cycling behavior of the optical transmission signal was monitored. The data shows a high correlation between optical signal and measured state-of-charge for both electrodes. This allows the state-of-charge determination with the help of an optical signal that is independent from electrical measurements. The additionally obtained cell information can be used to improve battery management systems and eventually achieve a saver and more efficient battery use.

Zusammenfassung: In situ methods are particularly beneficial for material characterization and research, due to their physical and chemical access. Our in situ video microscopical setup enables a direct optical observation of positive and negative battery electrodes during charge and discharge. Thereby, ion dynamics can be clearly seen as intercalation front, which is caused by a varying local state of charge (SoC) of the electrodes. The local SoC is seen as change in color or brightness. The latter is used to calculate apparent diffusion coefficients for an entire battery electrode via Fick's second law of diffusion. The diffusion coefficient is useful for the understanding of the overall electrical behavior of the battery and is aditionally required to design and simulate battery cells as well as to design future lithium ion chemistries.

Lifestyle interventions in Muslim patients with metabolic syndrome-a feasibility study

Zusammenfassung: Obesity, metabolic syndrome, and type-2 diabetes mellitus are common in Muslim patients living in Germany, most of whom are of Turkish origin. Lifestyle interventions must be tailored to religion and ethnicity. We tested the body weight-reducing effect of a 30% calorie-reduced intake diet, adjusted to individual energy expenditure, eating habits, and food preferences in a Turkish-background cohort. Eighty subjects were randomized to activity advice only or to a step-count device to monitor and document physical activity before and after the 12-week intervention. Fifty-three patients completed the study. Lifestyle interventions were effective in these Muslim subjects. Body weight was reduced by 6%; activity monitoring provided a modestly increased effect to 8%. Blood glucose, HbA1c, triglycerides and cholesterol improved also substantially. Subjects receiving metformin could reduce their dosage. Our data show that Muslim Turkish patients respond to interventions if these are tailored to their needs.
