Nature-based solutions for hydro-meteorological disaster risks reduction in European and South American cities

Within this project, NBS-ESA created a proposal that wassubmitted as part of the HORIZON 2020 Programme under Societal Challenge 5 'Climate action, environment, resource efficiency and raw materials' Version of 20/02/2017).The aim of the project to be carried out under Horizon 2020 isto investigate the increases in the frequency and scope of extreme hydro-meteorological events on European and South Americancities to support thecities to become better prepared to handle these events. The project therefore will investigate the causes of these risks and the impacts they may have in a set of European (i.e. Hamburg, Manchester, Aveiro) and Latin American (Montevideo, La Paz, Florianopolis and Caracas) cities. In addition, the project will develop nature based approaches and methods via which cities may be in a better position to cope with them.

The solutions to be exploited as part of the project include early-warning systems, reporting and monitoring of geo-risks (e.g. floods, extreme rainfall and landslides). The use of the methods to be developed as part of the project will strengthen the resilience of the participant cities, of their landscapes and ecosystem services, enabling environmentally sound adaptation strategies to climate change.

Activities and outputs:

• To gather and retrieve data on the occurrence and intensity of environmental disasters.

• To develop tools that support decision-making and involve civilians and other stakeholders in the assessment of exposure, vulnerability and risk analysis;

• To evaluate and analyse current early-warning systems, forecasts, monitoring, modelling and environmental disasters reporting, identifying their deficiencies and suggesting ways to improve them.
