Engineering

The College of Engineering at Virginia Tech is ranked #21 in Best US Engineering Schools (U.S. News & World Report) and offers a wide range of engineering classes for our students.

A particularly interesting area is aerospace. The department has an excellent reputation with classes that emphasize aerodynamics, vehicle structures, vehicle performance, stability & control as well as propulsion. Lab classes use the department's outstanding experimental facilities which include a large, research-quality subsonic wind tunnel with a twenty-four-foot-long, six-by-six foot cross section test area and state of the art automated control and data collection systems, a Mach 4 supersonic wind tunnel, a Mach 7 hypersonic wind tunnel, a UAS flight-test runway, an advanced power and propulsion lab, a center for space science and the AOE Studio for Design Innovation. Honeywell International has donated two turbofan aircraft engines commonly found on the Learjet 31, Cessna Citation III, and Dassault Falcon 900 to Virginia Tech for student research. In addition to a study semester abroad for Bachelor students, Master students can complete their Master's thesis at Virginia Tech as part of the J1 research scholar visa programme.

But Virginia Tech is not just interesting for aeronautical engineering students. The College also offers classes in other fields.

Life in Blacksburg & at Virginia Tech

If you love being outdoors, hiking, skiing and generally communing with nature, then the area around Blacksburg with the Blue Ridge Mountains on its doorstep, is a beautiful piece of the East coast of America. At the same time there are good bus and train connections to Washington DC, Philadelphia and New York for those who don't want to miss out on the big cities. Blacksburg is a small town with 40,000 inhabitants and half of them are Virginia Tech students. Life in Blacksburg is very much centred around the university with its 2,600 acre campus and the many clubs and sports faciltities. The students call themselves the "Hokies" and there is a very strong feeling of community, especially when the football team is playing in the university stadium with its 68,000 seats. The Princeton Review ranked Virginia Tech as no. 1 for best university quality of life. Read the reports from HAW Hamburg students below, who have spent a semester at Virginia Tech.
