Faculty Administration
At a faculty meeting on January 8, 2026, Prof. Dr. Heike Neumann was elected Dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Media and Information Technology. Following her nomination, Prof. Dr. Ulrike Herster was elected Vice Dean for Studies and Teaching, and Prof. Dr. Jan Mietzner was elected Vice Dean for Research, Transfer and Finance.
Dean of the Faculty: Prof. Dr. Heike Neumann
As dean, I guide and shape the development of our EMI faculty—keeping an eye on the big picture as well as our day-to-day interactions. Both within the university and externally, I serve as the point of contact who represents our faculty and advocates for its interests.
The strategic direction of the faculty is at the heart of my work: Together with the committees, I formulate long-term goals in teaching, research, and knowledge transfer, and work to sustainably sharpen our profile. Particular attention is paid to the responsible planning and effective use of our financial, material, and human resources.
As chair of the Faculty Board, I lead the meetings and implement the decisions made there. At the same time, I maintain close collaboration with the Executive Board of HAW Hamburg and support exchange and cooperation between the faculties to advance joint developments.
Vice Dean for Studies and Teaching: Prof. Dr. Ulrike Herster
Since March 2020, I have been pleased to work as a professor of software development at HAW Hamburg. Because I care deeply about the students and the quality of teaching, I am committed to ensuring high-quality education in my role as Vice Dean for Studies and Teaching. This includes, among other things, ensuring the smooth operation of teaching activities, fostering open communication with students and faculty, and continuously improving our degree programs. High-quality teaching, innovation, and good study conditions are clearly my top priorities in this regard.
Vice Dean for Research, Transfer and Finance: Prof. Dr. Jan Mietzner
As Vice Dean for Research and Transfer at the EMI Faculty, I am available to answer all external inquiries regarding research topics and potential collaboration and transfer projects. An overview of our current research activities can be found on our research page. The strategic development of research within the EMI Faculty is particularly close to my heart. For this reason, I chair our Research Committee, which deals, among other things, with the internal allocation of funds for research and transfer within the faculty. Personally, as a professor of communications engineering, I am active in our CEADS doctoral program and mentor doctoral students at Christian-Albrechts-Universität Kiel as part of my secondary affiliation there. As Vice Dean for Finance, I am also available to the staff of the EMI Faculty for any questions regarding financial matters.
Administrative Management: Sandra Braig
As the Administrative Head of the EMI Faculty, I am responsible for the strategic and operational management of our administration. This includes both the administrative implementation of budget and financial management as well as staffing and human resources management.
The administrative management and the administrative team serve as the interface between the faculty and the university’s central administration. By actively shaping administrative processes, we strive to optimize them and make them more efficient.
Together with the Dean’s Office, our goal is to create an administrative structure that not only optimally supports the needs of faculty, students, and staff but also fosters a positive and productive work environment.
