Important information
Due to the hacker attack at HAW Hamburg, the following library services are currently available:
Your electronic student ID card (also known as your chip card) is still valid as your library card. Please continue to use it as your library card (updated: March 2023).
HAW Hamburg members can use e-media licensed to HAW Hamburg (e-books, e-journals and databases) on campus via the WLAN network. WLAN is available in all HAW Hamburg rooms (i.e. not just in the libraries, but also in the Stiftstraße buildings). Additionally, selected e-books can be dowloaded and read at home. All e-media resources can be accessed via the HAW Catalogue.
The various libraries are open during the periods listed on the website. You can work in the libraries and use the print materials on site. You can also scan print materials in all of the libraries. Borrowing items during service-desk hours is possible in all of the libraries. Loans are currently only available for HAW Hamburg members.
You can return items to the libraries, but there may be delays in booking the items back in properly. Fees for overdue items will not be charged.
On 6 March 2023, the Business, Engineering and Computer Science (TWI) Library will open for you at Berliner Tor 7 (second floor). It is home to the collections from the former TWI 1 and TWI 2. The rooms in Berliner Tor 5 (seventh and eighth floors) will open at a later date as they are still being transformed into a new study space for students.
The online catalogue is functioning, and it is possible to use open-access electronic media. It is also possible to extend the borrowing period for items you already have on loan using your user account.

Alternatives to the HAW Hamburg libraries

Alternatives to the HAW Hamburg libraries
You can use your HAW Hamburg student card or employee card to obtain free-of-charge access to the libraries at all Hamburg universities (e.g. the TU Hamburg library, the Hamburg State and University Library and the HCU library) and borrow print materials. It is possible to search for materials at these libraries using the Hamburg Library Catalogue.
Using e-media and databases from other Hamburg libraries
It is also possible to use other libraries' e-media resources on site in their reading rooms. To do this you will need a library card from the particular library, which you can apply for online. The forms are available on the library websites. When you pick up your card you will need to show your HAW student ID card and your personal ID.
Here is a list of licensed databases available at the other libraries:
- TU Hamburg library: e.g. IEEE, Nautos, Scopus, VDE-Normenbibliothek
- Hamburg State and University Library: e.g. Beck-Online, Juris, Wiso Sozialwissenschaften
- HCU Hamburg library: e.g. Brockhaus, Juris, Nexis Pressedatenbank
Please note the terms of use at the libraries. If you have questions or require support, please speak to the staff at the library in question.

Overview of services currently available (Updated: 17 February 2023)
E-media resources available through the HAW libraries
................................................................................................................................................................................................
HAW Hamburg members – employees, students and instructors – can access numerous online resources from the HAW network. This access is available even when you are not physically at the university:
1. VPN connection
Almost all of the e-media licensed for use at HAW Hamburg can also be accessed remotely using the VPN connection.
You can find more information about using the VPN connection here. If you have difficulties using the VPN connection or have questions about it, please contact ITSC_support (at) haw-hamburg (dot) de. For questions related to our e-media resources, please use the call-a-librarian service (see above) or contact your library using this form.
Once you have connected to the HAW network using the VPN connection, you can search the HAW catalogue as you normally would and read full-text versions of online resources.
2. Shibboleth access
Shibboleth provides another way of accessing electronic resources. You can use your HAW account to log in, either via the Shibboleth portal at https://login.haw-hamburg.de or directly through the publisher listed in the HAW catalogue. A VPN connection is not necessary.
This service is currently under development.
