Starting your Studies in the Summer Semester 2026
Dear students, welcome to the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Media and Information Technology at HAW Hamburg!
Orientation Unit for the degree program Media Technology
The summer semester starts for first-year students on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, with the orientation unit. During the first week of classes, the so-called orientation unit ("Orientierungseinheit/OE") will be held for first-year students of the bachelor’s degree program Media Technology. Attendance at this unit is mandatory.
We will begin on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, at 9:30 a.m. at the production lab ("Produktionslabor") at the Hamburg Art and Media Campus (Building C (Tide Building), Finkenau 35, 22081 Hamburg). Please arrive in time for the start of the event, but no earlier than 15 minutes beforehand.
This is a series of various events designed to help first-year students adjust to life at the HAW and introduce them to the challenges of their studies and academic life.
Another key objective is to break down the barriers of anonymity among students as early as possible—ideally within the first week—through personal interactions in small work and discussion groups, as well as through shared leisure activities.
Specifically, courses on the following topics are offered—these may vary from semester to semester:
- Getting to know your classmates, older students, and professors
- Exploring the buildings, libraries, laboratories, and cafeteria
- Organization and self-management of your study program
- Information about the Student Council and the General Student Committee
- Methods and challenges of group work
- Information about career opportunities
- Getting to know Hamburg as a place to study
Orientation Units for the degree programs Electrical Engineering and Information Technology and Renewable Energy Systems and Energy Management
An orientation unit ("Orientierungseinheit/OE") is held at the start of the program. During this unit, you will receive all the important information you need to start your studies, you will be assigned to your semester groups, and complete your registration on the computer network—therefore, attending is essential for a smooth start into your first semester.
The orientation unit will take place from April 7, 2026, to April 10, 2026. For more information about the orientation unit, please visit the website of the orientation unit.
Preliminary Courses for the degree programs Electrical Engineering and Information Technology and Renewable Energy Systems and Energy Management
Mathematics is essential for success in a degree program in Electrical Engineering, Media, and Information Technology. The degree programs at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Media, and Information Technology therefore require a certain level of foundational knowledge in mathematics. To refresh and reinforce this foundational knowledge, we offer first-year students a mathematics preparatory course before each semester, which combines supervised sessions with self-study units on the online learning platform viaMINT—video-based interactive preparatory courses. The mathematics preparatory course is offered exclusively for first-year students of the following bachelor’s degree programs:
- Electrical Engineering and Information Technology
- Information Engineering
- Media Technology und
- Renewable Energy Systems and Energy Management
The preparatory course will take place from March 18 to April 2, 2026. On March 18, 2026, the preparatory course begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 1:00 p.m. On all other days, the preparatory course begins at 9:00 a.m. and ends at 1:00 p.m.
We recommend the in-person preparatory course. If you are unable to attend in person, we also offer an online preparatory course via Zoom. Registration is not required.

Start of the semester for the master’s programs Automation Technology, Information and Communication Engineering, and Microelectronic Systems
In these master’s programs, a welcome session and the selection of elective courses take place on the first day of classes. All students admitted to the master’s programs will be contacted individually shortly before the start of the semester and will receive all the necessary information regarding the location, room, and current course options.
