Comment: Rixaka, the cultural journal of the African National Congress, was launched to establish a platform allowing full expression of the cultural voice in the national liberation movement. All forms of cultural and artistic expression, such as performing arts, visual arts, film, poetry, literature, were explored as means by which the spirit of revolt among the broad masses could enhance the striking power of the resistance movement and inspire the masses to fight for a liberated country. President of the African National Congress, OR Tambo, in 1984, charged "our cultural workers with the task of using their craft to give voice, not only to the grievances, but also to the profoundest aspirations of the oppressed and exploited"
