If you are an advanced student applying for placement in a higher study semester, you must obtain a HAW Hamburg preliminary placement certificate as a prior eligibility check. It is mandatory to upload this certificate in the myHAW application portal.

Please note that this English-taught degree programme commenced in the summer semester 2025 and admits new first-semester students once per year only.

Submission of documents

Please email the following documents at least two weeks before the application deadlines (31 May / 30 November) to me_transfer (at) haw-hamburg (dot) de. Send one email containing all files:

1. Transcript of records (PDF, in English).
2. Recognition file (Excel): download the template and map your completed courses to the corresponding HAW modules.
3. Course comparison (Word): download the template and describe the course content of your completed modules.
4. Credit system information: a document explaining how credit points or workload are calculated at your university (this may be included in the transcript).
5. Anabin printout confirming that your university and degree programme are rated H+ (German classification; guidance: https://hallogermany.com/blog/anabin-guide-academic-degrees).

If an additional year of schooling was required before you became eligible to study at a public German university, please note that credits from this year cannot be transferred.

Please also note that the preliminary placement certificate does not replace the final recognition and placement decision issued after enrolment by the Chair of the Examination Board.

Course recognition / credit transfer can only be applied for by students already enrolled at HAW Hamburg.

If an additional year of schooling was mandatory before being eligible to study at a public German university, please note that the credits obtained during this year cannot be transferred.

When applying for recognition of prior study achievements, please prepare and submit the following documents:

1. HAW Hamburg student ID card
2. Transcript of records (PDF file)
3. Anabin confirmation showing that your university (name of institution) and degree programme are rated H+ 
   (German classification; guidance: https://hallogermany.com/blog/anabin-guide-academic-degrees).
4. Proof of the credit scope you seek to have recognised (e.g., SWS / CP).
   Explanation: SWS (Semesterwochenstunden, “semester hours per week”) indicates how many hours a specific module is taught per week at your university. Please also explain how credit points are calculated at your institution!
