Amazon 2030 – Sustainability Issues in the World's Largest Rainforest Region

The Symposium will provide a unique opportunity to holistically discuss matters related to sustainable development in respect of the Amazon region, tackling issues related to:

• Amazon and land use issues
• Biodiversity conservation and ecosystems services
• Issues related to indigenous people
• Ecological threats by fires
• Territorial management
• Natural resources management
• Food security
• Poverty and social justice
• Sustainable development prospects
• Climate change
• * Circular economy & technologies to protect the environment

The Symposium is also part of the "Universities and Climate Change Initiative", a worldwide effort led by the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences in Germany, to combine the knowledge and know-how of universities, in order to tackle the many challenges posed by climate change.

The event will be held in the city of Santarém, in the State of Pará, Brazil, on 4th-5th September 2023. Santarém is located at the confluence of the rivers Amazonas and Tapajós, and is the second most important city in Pará. It was once home of the Tapajós  indians, a native tribe after whom the river has been named. The city has its own airport, which serves major Brazilian airports.

Papers selected and presented at the event may subsequently be considered for publication in the book "Amazon 2030 – Sustainability Issues in the World´s Largest Rainforests Region". The book will be part of the World Sustainability Series www.springer.com/series/13384. Published by Springer Nature, this is the leading peer-reviewed book series on matters related to sustainable development. Please note that submissions to the book are subject of standard peer-review procedures.

The deadlines are as follows:

• Final deadline for submission of abstracts: 30th May 2023
• Deadline for registrations: 30th June 2023
• Deadline for the submission of papers: 30th September 2023 (The full paper for the publication in the book "Amazon 2030 – Sustainability Issues in the World´s Largest Rainforests Region" should be sent after the conference)

A fee of Euro 250 will be charged to international delegates, and R$ 560 for delegates from Brazil. The fees will cover coffee breaks, lunches and one conference dinner. They also include a PDF copy of the book "Amazon 2030 – Sustainability Issues in the World´s Largest Rainforests Region".

This event is part of  of the Continuing Professional Development Programme on Sustainable Development, undertaken by the European School of Sustainability Science and Research (ESSSR) and Inter-University Sustainable Development Research Programme (IUSDRP). An official certificate of participation, useful for professional development purposes and to be shown to employers, will be issued to participants, with the equivalent of 20 hours, including attendance to the event and preparation time. The issuing of the Certificate is included in the registration fees.
