World Symposium on Artificial Intelligence for Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation (WS-AI4CCAM)

The Symposium aims to:

a)   Advance AI-driven climate solutions by showcasing cutting-edge AI applications in climate modelling, renewable energy optimization, carbon capture, and disaster resilience.

b) Promote ethical and equitable AI deployment with guidelines for responsible AI use in climate action, ensuring fairness, transparency, and inclusivity, particularly for vulnerable regions.

c) Strengthen global and local partnerships, by facilitating collaboration between governments, tech firms, academia, and NGOs to scale AI innovations for climate adaptation in industralised countries as well as in the Global South.

d) Enhance science-based climate policy and education by integrating AI tools with open data, climate modelling, and low-cost monitoring systems, fostering innovation in research, teaching, and community-based adaptation.
 

The Symposium will combine keynote speeches, plenary and parallel session, featuring leading experts on AI ethics, climate science, and sustainable development. Some hands-on sessions will try new AI solutions for climate challenges, such as deforestation monitoring and smart urban planning. Also, exhibitions of AI tools for real-time climate risk assessment and mitigation will take place.

Delegates come from a cross-sectoral range of areas. They are:

• AI and climate change experts
• Teaching and research staff;
• Representatives from companies working with AI
• Students
• Other people interested in the field.
   

As Latin America´s largest economy and a major hub in the region, Brazil is an excellent location for the event, which will also provide a platform to highlight climate challenges faced by tropical and developing regions, including Amazon deforestation and coastal vulnerability. The City of Niteroi, very close to Rio de Janeiro (ca. 21 Km away) and which shares the same international airport, hosts the Federal Fluminense University (UFF) a very dynamic institution, 

Papers may address, but are not limited to, the following themes:

• Industry 5.0: AI, IoT, robotics, and automation in green manufacturing
• AI in support of climate models 
• Experiential AI and digital tools in climate change adaptation 
• Policies and institutional frameworks to promote AI 
• Best practices in using AI for energy-efficiency and operations
• Public-private partnerships for AI use and technology transfer 
• Measuring the impact of AI in handling climate change 
• AI-enhanced monitoring of extreme climate events and disaster risk management
• Data-driven climate education and citizen science powered by AI
• AI-assisted analysis of ocean-atmosphere interactions and teleconnections

Delegates come from a cross-sectoral range of areas. They are:

• other people interested in the field.

The Symposium is hosted by the Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF), Brazil, in partnership with the Laboratory for Applied Modelling in Climate and Environment (LAMMOC/UFF), the Postgraduate Programme in Biosystems Engineering (PGEB/UFF), the UFF Sustainability Commission, and the BiodAI – AI Engineering Research Center for Biodiversity.

It is also supported by the Research and Transfer Centre for Sustainable Development and Climate Change Management at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (Germany), the European School of Sustainability Science and Research (ESSSR), the Inter-University Sustainable Development Research Programme (IUSDRP), and the German-Brazilian Science and Technology Network (GERBRAS-SCIENCENET).

As an output of the event, the book “Artificial Intelligence for Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation” will be published by Springer Nature, as part of the "Climate Change Management Series”: link.springer.com/series/8740. This is, with over 50 books to date, the world’s leading peer-reviewed book series on matters related to climate change. Over 2.500 scientists and former doctoral students have published their work in the series. The peer-reviewed nature of the series means that publications produced as part of it have been officially accepted for promotion and tenure purposes over the years, and as validated outputs as part of PhD Programmes.
 

Interested participants are invited to submit a 300-word abstract (including the title, outline of the work, and author contact details) to info@iccip.net by 30 October 2025.

To offset some of the costs of the organisation of the event and the book production costs, a registration fee of € 275 will be charged to international delegates, and R$500 for delegates from Brazil (R$250 for students). The fee includes the coffee breaks and lunches on the two days, and a PDF of the book to those who contributed to it. Information on how to register will be sent to the delegates whose contributions have been accepted.
 

The earlier submission of abstracts is strongly encouraged. The deadline for submissions of abstracts should not be regarded as the date the abstracts are due. Rather, it is the last possible day. Therefore, authors who submit their abstracts at a later stage should be mindful of the fact that presentation slots may be taken, and only poster presentations may be possible. Please submit your abstract as soon as you can, to avoid possible problems.
