Hamburg is the third-largest centre for civil aviation in the world and home to the main Airbus assembly site. Hamburg Aviation is Germany's competence cluster of industry, research and teaching in aeronautical engineering and HAW Hamburg is an active member. The university offers a Bachelor and Master's programme in aeronautical engineering and several of its professors are involved in different areas of research in the future of aircraft design. 

Exchange students from HAW Hamburg partner universities can spend a semester in Hamburg completing research as a project or as part of their Bachelor's or Master's thesis with the AERO research team. 

Prerequisites:

• Background in aerospace engineering
• Fluent English; German is an advantage but not a prerequisite.

The MARS Group (Multi Agent Research and Simulation) at the HAW Hamburg is developing distributed and highly scalable agent simulation environments. MARS is not a single programme, but a service accessible through your web browser. MARS features a multitude of processes and tools chained together with a focus on usability to provide an approach to today's simulation requirements. We are applying MARS in various fields, e.g. savanna ecology, smart mobility, pedestrian dynamics, epidemiology.   www.mars-group.org

Depending on your interests you might get involved in software development, data management, operational (cloud) or even modelling tasks. Additionally, we are offering assignments in data sciences (e.g. analysis and visualisation of big data and machine learning). Publishing results in academic papers is also appreciated.

KiSS Kinetics in Sound and Space / Auditory Scenography in VR and AR

HAW Hamburg and Hamburg University of Music and Theatre have a joint artistic research programme within the graduate school entitled Kinetics in Sound and Space. Two research projects are conducted at the HAW Hamburg Sound Lab/Immersive Audio Lab. They investigate the aesthetics and technology of auditory augmented realities. The lab is equipped with a 33.2 loudspeaker array, VR and AR technology, a position tracking system and rapid HRTF measurement capability.

The following are possible research topics:

• Implementation of a VR audio reference room based on a Unity 3D model
• Implementation of a speeded spatial localisation test in a VR game environment
• Implementation of an AR-based production interface for spatial audio
• Further development of the MESM-based HRTF capturing system
• Assistance in aesthetic experiments in spatial audio and AR
• Assistance in the development of VR/AR audio with personalised HRTF sets
• Assistance in the organisation of an international conference on spatial audio and sonic art

Prerequisites:

Undergraduate or graduate students of computer science, music technology, media art and the like, with basic knowledge of '3D' audio techniques and binaural audio as well as of programming in VR environments, e.g. games engines, Max/MSP, Pd, C++, C#. Strong interest in specific technologies such as Higher Order Ambisonics, binaural rendering, virtual acoustics, and augmented reality, as well as in aesthetic issues like music production in spatial audio or VR environments.

Depending on the specific task there are specific skills required, e.g. in-depth knowledge of database programming, of sensor/interface integration, of sonic art or of music production. Please specify your preferred field of work in the application.

In several research projects we analyze various challenging problems in vibration and acoustics in mobile systems, design new test setups and develop new methods for analysis. New and emerging propulsion and actuation systems often produce challenging vibroacoustics problems. We analyze the underlying problems, develop pragmatic solutions and verify them in sophisticated test setups.

In the current research projects we offer various topics for a student thesis or a research semester.

Prerequisites:

An academic background in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, physics, aerospace or automotive engineering is needed. Depending on the actual work, some background in aviation, automotive, mechatronics, actuation systems, vibration theory or acoustics would be useful.
